A red filled row in a context menu shouted louder than the action
deserves. The entry now looks like every other entry and only its
text is red, so the menu stays calm and the warning is still there.
- Menu: danger entries are ghost buttons with the new text style
danger. On hover they get the same grey fill as all other entries.
- Theme: new text style danger in the normal font size. The existing
warning style is small and did not fit a menu row.
- Button: two getters expose the drawn text colour and fill, so a
test can measure the look instead of reading the danger flag.
- Test hook __gm.menuLooks() lists both per menu entry.
- Confirm dialogs keep their filled red Delete button. That is a
separate widget and was not part of the request.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 172 files, 2498 tests, CHECK EXIT 0
- e2e 25: ALL PASSED, 31 checks. New check in 25g opens the menu
with a real right click: Delete row has text #e0553f and no fill,
Insert frames keeps the normal text colour.
- Counter-check: with the old styling the check fails with text
#ffffff on fill #e0553f. Original restored per cmp and rebuilt.
- Not checked: other menus (graph, assets) have no own check. They
run through the same Menu code.

Dragging from right to left in a canvas text field only moved the
cursor. The hidden input behind the field got every selection sorted
and without a direction. Its selectionchange echo then handed back the
sorted range, and the anchor jumped to the mouse on the first move.
- KeyboardBridge sets the selection with 'backward' when the focus
lies before the anchor, and reads selectionDirection when the input
reports a change.
- TextField passes anchor and focus through unchanged. Its own
sorting is gone.
- Shift+Left runs through the same path. The cursor should now sit at
the moving end there too. This is not tested on its own.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 167 files, 2435 tests, CHECK EXIT 0
- e2e 2: ALL PASSED, 25 checks. New check 2d-ii drags right to left
in the name field and reads start 0, end 13, direction backward.
- Counter-check without the direction: 2d-ii fails with end 2, the
reported symptom.
- e2e check total in README goes to 1401 (computed, not run in full).

The scene view drew its symbols from its own SVGs, each in a type
colour and some on a plate. They looked heavier than the panel icons
and were hard to read on busy ground. Symbols of different objects
also sat on top of each other whenever their positions met.
- Every symbol is now the panel icon of its kind, one file for both
places. The scene-only SVGs in src/viewport/icons are gone.
- Symbols are white in a thin dark outline with no plate behind them.
haloSvg widens each shape of the file by its own stroke and draws
that silhouette dark under the icon, so no second file is needed.
- A butt stroke end would leave its end without outline. The halo caps
such strokes square, and the rigidbody arrow shaft is now a filled
rect so its top edge is outlined exactly.
- Symbols are 18 world units across, stay upright and are clickable.
A click selects the object, a drag moves it.
- symbolLayout places every symbol on its object's position. Symbols
that overlap stand on a ring round the middle of their positions,
evenly spaced one icon apart. A ring that reaches into another
symbol takes it in until nothing overlaps. Ownership plays no part.
- Names sit beside their symbol, on the outside of a ring. Selection
frames and parent links follow the symbol.
- A collider icon no longer shows trigger or invalid state. The
outline colour of the shape still does.
- A lone collider sits on its sprite's middle again. A press there on
an unselected sprite drags the collider, so e2e 02 and 16 now grab
the sprite beside its middle. Hook __gm.container.objectRect helps
16 find that spot.
Tests:
- check.sh: 2245 tests, CHECK EXIT 0 (+8 for layout and halo)
- e2e 1-16,31,39-43: 670 PASS, 2 FAIL. Both were sampling too
strictly for the thinner, smaller icons. 5c looked for the exact
outline colour, which the thin outline only reaches blended at this
zoom. 31n started the ring scan one pixel past the smaller ring.
Both are fixed, and e2e 5,31 then passed with 48 checks.
- 5c checks white with an outline and none of the old colours, 41b
checks the ring positions and that a click on a symbol selects its
object, 31n checks the now white particle ring.
- Counter-checks: without the halo only 5c fails, also with the looser
outline match. Without the layout the ring and click checks in 41b
fail. Originals restored by cmp.
- The e2e check total stays 1351.

A single click on an asset link used to select the asset. That swapped
the inspector over to the asset, so the object being edited was gone
and the second click of a double-click landed on a different row. A
click now pings the asset in the asset panel, like Unity does in its
Project window, and a double-click opens it.
- state.pingAsset(id) emits a new `ping` event. It runs no command and
leaves the selection alone, like openAsset.
- ListView.ping(id) draws an accent overlay on the row. It stays full
for 200 ms and is gone after 1 s, driven by onFrame. destroy cancels
the animation.
- The asset panel expands the group, scrolls to the row and pings it.
- The capture listener and followedLink in the inspector are gone.
The inspector is no longer rebuilt, so pressCount on the label is
enough. followsPress and pressOf are no longer exported from ui/.
- The "Asset" and "Part of" rows of a scene object were a ghost button
that selected the asset. They are now a link label with the same
ping and open behaviour, next to a read-only field with the name.
- The link logic lives in linkLabel() in fieldFactory.ts. createFieldRow
and the asset row share it.
- TextField gets a readOnly option: no focus, no caret, no hover.
- New hook __gm.assetPing(). inspectorLink also reports the field
next to the label (value, readOnly).
Findings:
- Renaming an asset while its object was selected left the old name
in the inspector. This was already the case with the old button.
The refresh now updates the name.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 151 files, 2228 tests, CHECK EXIT 0 (before 150 / 2226).
New: tests/ui/list-ping.test.ts for pingAlpha and pingAsset.
- e2e 1-16,28 on the final build: ALL PASSED, 575 checks.
28l-ii has 9 checks instead of 5.
- Counter-checks, each failing exactly at its check: ping also selects,
no follow-up frame (alpha stays 0.55), inspector never opens, field
takes focus, name not refreshed, label not a link.
- Check total 1345, calculated. CI last counted 1336 at fd6af84.

A sprite's texture and shader were only reachable by hunting for them
in the asset panel. Every place that shows such a reference now leads
straight to it.
- Object menu (hierarchy and scene view): "Open texture" and "Open
shader" sit right below "Open asset" when the sprite has one. The
object's own values count, so an overridden shader opens the
override.
- Asset context menu: the same entries at the top.
- Inspector: every asset field with a value shows its label as a blue,
underlined link. One click selects the asset, a double click opens
it. An override stays gold and gets the underline too.
- The first click rebuilds the inspector, so the second one lands on a
different row. The inspector catches that second click before any
row sees it.
- New pure rule `references.ts`: the asset behind a reference field. A
frame leads to its sheet. Kinds without a tab (palette, font, sound)
get no menu entry.
- `followsPress` in `clicks.ts` keeps the double-click window and
tolerance in one place.
- `activateAsset` in `actions.ts`: opening means the same everywhere
as a double click in the asset panel, so a scene also becomes the
active one. The asset panel uses it too.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 150 files, 2226 tests, CHECK EXIT 0 (before 148/2214).
- 12 new unit tests: 6 for the reference rule, 4 for the link in
createFieldRow, 2 for followsPress.
- 5 new e2e checks in 28l-ii: both menus, the link's look, click
selects, double click opens.
- e2e 1-16,26,28,35,39,40 on the final build: ALL PASSED, 732 checks.
- Counter-probes: no "Open ..." entries, no underline and a second
click never recognised each fail exactly at their checks.
- Check total 1341 (CI counted 1336 at fd6af84), computed.

The theme asks for Source Sans 3 at weight 500, but fonts.ts only
loaded 400, 600 and 700. The browser synthesised the 500 text. The
issue comment also asked for the symbols the font lacks to become SVG
icons. A scan of src/ against the font's cmap found 20 such characters
in 30 places.
- fonts.ts loads source-sans-3-latin-500-normal.woff2 as well.
- Menus draw their ticks and the "current" dot as icons. The dot is a
new MenuItem.current field and no longer part of the label text.
- Inspector action buttons (reset, apply, fit width/height) are
icons. The menu arrow behind them is the drawn Dropdown chevron.
- Kind marks come from a table in markIcons.ts. Picture kinds use an
icon, # and Aa stay text because the font has them.
- Scene marks in the asset panel, sound play/stop and the transition
arrows are icons too.
- Apply is an icon although the font has the arrow. It sits next to
the reset icon and would look different as a glyph.
- A new Icon widget draws on redraw like Button, so Node tests need no
DOMParser.
- Tests find icons through the SVG id. The new hook
__gm.locateIcons(id) and the harness helpers findIcon/clickIcon
replace locate() on the old characters.
Findings:
- Weight 700 is loaded but the theme never uses it. Left as is.
- The old scene-mark check in module 35 accepted any play glyph on
screen. It now checks the mark on the start scene's row.
- Module 44 needs the textures from module 37 and fails without it.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 145 files, 2187 tests, exit 0 (before 144 / 2143).
- New tests/ui/fonts.test.ts: every theme weight is loaded, and every
character in src/ exists in every shipped face. The cmap reader
matches fontTools (231 characters).
- Icon tests cover the 19 new files. Each kind mark is either an
icon or text, never both.
- e2e 1-16,22,30,34,35,43,44: 586 green, 0 FAIL, then 44 stopped
for lack of module 37. e2e 1-16,37,44,47,48: 618 green.
e2e 1-14 on the final build: 454 green.
- Two new e2e checks: loaded weights in 14, a reset icon pixel in 04.
- Counter-probes all fail as expected: 500 removed, a play glyph put
back, the struct icon removed (one unit test each). In the browser,
500 removed and reset icon hidden fail exactly the two new checks.
- Editor-suite check sum 1312 (1310 measured by CI at 056a622, +2).

Until now every boolean operation on vector art threw the curves away.
The shapes were flattened into line segments, the operation ran on those
segments, and the result came back as a polygon. A circle that nothing
even touched came out of an Exclude with 40 corners instead of its four
points and handles. Now the result carries the original curves again,
and only the edges the operation really drew stay straight.
- While flattening, every sample point remembers which curve it came
from and where on that curve it sits. The operation runs on the same
segments as before, so nothing about the boolean result changes.
- When a run of result points walks along one of those curves, that
piece is cut out of the original curve again with de Casteljau. This
is an exact cut, not a fit through the points.
- An edge whose two ends sit on the same curve but whose middle does
not follow it stays straight. Without that rule a cut-off cap would
bulge back into the shape.
- A closed contour keeps at least three points, so a lens shape does
not collapse into two.
- The rule lives in its own module, src/core/model/vectorCurves.ts.
vectorBoolean.ts only hands it the table of sampled points.
Findings:
- The two intersection points themselves sit up to 0.09 canvas pixels
off the original curve. Clipper cuts the flattened segments, not the
curves, so this was the case before as well and stays inside the
0.2 px sampling tolerance.
- Refining those points with Newton steps on the curve was measured and
gave nothing back (0.02952 px instead of 0.02978 px), because the
error is in the intersection itself and not in the estimate. The code
was removed again.
- Theme.ts rowHeight 22 -> 24 is in this commit. The change is not mine,
it was already in the working tree; gate and module 47 are green with
it.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 143 files, 2133 tests, exit 0 (was 2127)
- e2e module 47 on a fresh seed: all passed, 59 checks (was 57)
- 6 new unit tests: untouched circle, untouched side plus a straight cut
edge, a cut in the middle of a curve, a chord crossing one curve
twice, two overlapping circles, the three point minimum
- 2 new e2e checks in block 47p: point count and handles from the model,
plus a pixel pair on the round edge
- Four counter-proofs, all bite: no reconstruction -> 5 unit tests and
the e2e check fail with 35 points and nothing curved; no chord test ->
the cap bulges back to 28.28; no three point rule -> the lens test
fails; handles halved -> the pixel check reads background

Until now every port of "First not empty" was grey and typeless, so the
editor could not tell you what actually travels through the node. The
output is now typed as soon as both inputs agree, and every any-input is
painted in the colour of its own edge. Nothing changes at runtime.
- A NodeDef can declare which of its ports carry the same value
(`sharedType: { inputs, outputs }`). The rule itself lives as a pure
function `agreedType` in `src/core/graph/portTypes.ts`.
- Only the output inherits. It becomes the shared type when every input
of the group is connected and they all carry the same type, otherwise
it stays `any`.
- The inputs stay `any` on purpose. `canConnect` checks against the port
type and a busy input is replaced by the new edge, so a typed `a`
could never be re-plugged with a text without disconnecting first.
- Chains do not propagate. When looking up what feeds an input, a node
of the same kind reports the `any` it is registered with, so two of
them in a row stay untyped and a data cycle cannot ask itself in a
circle.
- An edge that the new type makes invalid stays where it is and turns
red. `EdgeLayer` already paints a mismatching edge with `danger`,
nothing is disconnected on its own.
- New `PortDef.paintType`: colour only, never truth. It is set in
`drawnDef` and read in `NodeView.redraw`, so `canConnect`, the
interpreter and the compiler keep seeing `any`. Every connected
any-input is painted, not just members of a `sharedType` group; ghost
ports keep their hollow red look.
- The pin now matches the edge that ends in it, because both take the
colour from the resolved output type of the neighbour. Mixed sources
therefore show two colours, which explains why the output stays grey.
- New hooks `__gm.graph.portTypes(id)`, `__gm.graph.edgeColor(id)` and
`__gm.themeColor(name)`. `portTypes` reports type and paint colour
separately so the type checks do not silently become colour checks.
Findings:
- `resolveDef` only appends derived ports to the registered ones, so a
fixed port cannot be retyped that way -- it would appear twice. The
shared type is therefore resolved before the ports are built.
- Answer 5 of the issue (inline field follows the type) has no case left
under variant A: an unconnected input stays `any` and keeps its text
field.
- `Item at`, `Join` and `Equals` do not profit: `Item at` has no
any-input, the other two have fixed outputs. The next candidates are
the shader arithmetic nodes, which were left alone.
Tests:
- ./check.sh -> 143 files, 2127 tests, exit 0 (was 142 / 2113)
- GM_STEPS=1-6 fresh -> ALL PASSED, 245 checks (was 242), 9 of them new
- 14 new unit tests in tests/core/shared-port-type.test.ts
- 9 new e2e checks in block 6z, one of them a pixel check straight on
the pin via pixelAt + themeColor
- Counter-probes all bite: filtering unconnected inputs out of
`agreedType` fails 3 unit tests, ignoring `inherit` fails 1, killing
the derivation in the bundle fails exactly the 2 expected e2e checks,
and never setting `paintType` fails 4 unit tests plus the 3 pin
checks (#bdbdbd instead of #e6a8ff / #6fcf97)
- Screenshot read: `a` pink, `b` green, output `value` grey, edges in
the same colours
- Check total 1302 (1299 + 3), 1293 was measured by CI at 1a3babf

The focus outline of a text field was only visible at its corners.
The mask that clips the text covered the whole field, border included,
so the 1 px stroke was cut away along every straight edge. Only the
rounded corners bent inwards far enough to survive. With the larger
radius the new theme tried, this became obvious.
- TextField puts text, selection and caret into their own container.
Only that container is masked. Background and outline are not.
- NumberField and the rename field in lists inherit the fix.
- The theme radius goes back to 2 px.
- New debug hook __gm.focusedRect() returns where the focused widget
sits, so a check can read its border.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 141 files, 2080 tests, exit 0
- GM_STEPS=2: ALL PASSED, 24 checks (one new)
- The new check in 2c reads the middle of all four edges of the
focused name field. All four must be the focus blue.
- Counter-check with the old full-field mask: the check fails, all
four edges read #24272e.
- Editor check total is now 1286 (1285 + 1), computed, not measured.

Theme named Inter and JetBrains Mono, but neither was ever shipped,
so every machine drew the editor in whatever it had installed. The
e2e runs measured text in a different face than the user saw.
- Five Latin woff2 faces live in src/ui/fonts/ next to their OFL
licences: Source Sans 3 400/500/600/700 and Source Code Pro 400.
- fonts.ts loads them through FontFace, and main.ts waits for them
before the first widget exists, so Pixi measures the real face.
- A face that fails to load is reported in the console and the
system fallback in Theme takes over.
- Theme is retuned by hand: 12 px body, 22 px rows, smaller gaps
and padding, radius 8, and weight 500 for bold and headings.
- The scene background default follows Theme.colors.graphBackground.
This makes core import from ui for the first time.
Findings:
- The 500 file is in the folder but fonts.ts does not register it
yet, so weight 500 currently falls back to the 400 face.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 141 files, 2080 tests, exit 0.
- e2e not run. Checks that measure widths or row positions are
expected to need updating for the new metrics.

Name, opacity and Z each sat in a separate field below or beside
the list. You had to select a row first and then look elsewhere to
change it. Duplicating was a separate button or not possible at all.
Now the row itself carries everything.
- SortableList gets three optional callbacks. onDuplicate shows a
copy button between the eye and the delete button. onRename opens
a text field on double click, Enter or a click outside commits,
Esc cancels, an empty name is ignored. value puts a NumberField
into the row.
- Dragging on the number changes the value and never moves the row.
A whole drag is one undo step, the canvas follows live.
- Copy and delete only show on the hovered and the selected row.
Their space stays reserved, so nothing jumps on hover.
- Pixel layers: copy right above with the same pixels on all
frames, rename, opacity in percent. The Name and Opacity fields
below the list are gone.
- Pixel frames: copy right after, replaces the Duplicate button.
- Tilemap layers: copy with cells, Z and visibility, rename, Z in
the row. The Name and Z fields in the panel are gone.
- Vector shapes: copy at the same place and select it, rename.
- New in core: DuplicateVectorShapeCommand,
DuplicateTilemapLayerCommand, withLayerDuplicated and copyName
("X copy", "X copy 2"). copyName lives in src/core/util/names.ts
because the model never imports from commands/.
Findings:
- Double clicking a shape that is not selected yet only selects it.
The first click moves the list up, so the second click misses the
name. Module 47 selects the row first.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 138 files, 2055 tests, CHECK EXIT 0 (before 2052).
- GM_STEPS=47,48 (fresh, twice): ALL PASSED, 91 checks (before 86).
- GM_STEPS=39,40,47,48: module 40 green, 47 died on the rename
check, which was a test fault and is fixed.
- Counter probes: a constant copyName fails the shape and pixel
layer tests. A dead copy hit fails the copy check in 47.
- Check total 1272 in README and wiki, computed (1266 + 6).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The layer, frame and shape lists still had their add and delete
buttons scattered below the list, each in its own layout. They now
live in the shared SortableList, so every list works the same way.
- SortableList gets an optional header with the title on the left
and a + on the right, plus an optional x per row next to the eye.
- The keepOne option hides the x on the last remaining row, so a
pixel art image and a tilemap always keep one layer.
- Pixel art layers and frames and tilemap layers use header, + and
x. Only Merge down and Duplicate stay below the lists.
- Vector art shapes get the x but no +. Add shape stays below the
list and Delete shapes stays for a multi-selection.
- The section headings in the pixel art column use the same style
as the list titles and the inspector.
Findings:
- The wait loop added to check 47i for #196 only waited for the
right half of the shape. If the texture landed between the two
reads, the left half was still blue and the check failed. It now
waits for both halves.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 138 files, 2052 tests, exit 0.
- GM_STEPS=39,40,47,48 (fresh): ALL PASSED, 156 checks (was 154).
- GM_STEPS=47,48 (fresh, final): ALL PASSED, 86 checks.
- Two new e2e checks: x on a shape (47) and x on a frame (48). The
tilemap check in 40 now uses the x instead of Delete layer.
- Counter-check: with the x not reporting to its owner, exactly the
two new checks fail.
- Check total 1266 in README and wiki is computed (1264 + 2).

Reordering shapes by dragging worked well in the vector tab. Pixel
art layers and frames and tilemap layers still used up/down buttons.
All three lists now share one widget built from the shape list.
- SortableList in the UI toolkit, with the drag rules next to it in
src/ui/sortable.ts. A row has an optional thumbnail, a name, a hint
on the right and an eye toggle. Every drop is one undo step.
- The shape list is a thin wrapper around it. shapeRows.ts is gone,
its tests moved to the new rules.
- Pixel art layers show the layer alone on the current frame, frames
show the whole frame. Up/Down, Hide, Earlier and Later are gone.
- Tilemap layers get the eye instead of the checkbox. The per-row
up, down and delete buttons are replaced by Delete layer next to
Add layer.
- A row is selected on release instead of press. Selecting rebuilt
the inspector or tilemap panel and cancelled a drag that started
on a row not yet selected.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 138 files, 2052 tests, exit 0 (before 137 / 2051).
- GM_STEPS=39,40,47,48 (fresh seed): ALL PASSED, 154 checks.
- 5 new e2e checks. Check total 1264 in the README is computed
(1259 + 5), CI never measured 1259.
- Counter-checks bite: dropMove ignoring reversed fails a unit test,
a tilemap drop not applied fails the drag check, a layer thumbnail
showing all layers fails the thumbnail check.

Dragging a point only redrew once the hand stopped moving, which the
user reported after stage 3 and which measures as a real backlog, not a
feeling: every pointer move wrote the model and fired state.preview(),
and a project event rebuilds the panels, the run in the editor and the
picture the drawing is rasterised into. A mouse reports about 125 times
a second while the screen takes 60, so the queue grew instead of the
drawing moving.
- Measured with a throwaway e2e probe sending 120 moves at the 8 ms of
a real mouse, against a growing scene. Per move event: 10 -> 7 ms
with an empty scene, 19 -> 4 ms at 40 objects, 36 -> 3 ms at 120.
The 120 moves took 4173 ms before and 960 ms after, which is the
time they were supposed to take.
- New onFrame(key, fn) in src/ui/render.ts collects such work per key
and runs it in the ticker before app.render(), because afterwards it
would be one frame late in the picture. The rule lives in ui/ rather
than in the canvas so a second caller gets it for free.
- VectorArtCanvas only queues in pointermove now, and cancels its slot
on pointer up, where the command writes the final state anyway.
During the gesture the drag's own copy of the rings is the truth and
the model is never read back, so nothing is lost by the delay.
The same cost sits in the scene viewport, the texture tab and the graph,
which all call preview() from their move handler. They are untouched:
that is outside the reported bug.
Tests: check.sh 127 files, 1883 tests, exit 0 (was 1878). Full e2e
suite locally instead of CI only because the change sits in the render
loop: ALL PASSED - 1172 checks, the sum unchanged - a timing check in
the browser would flutter under CI load. Five new unit tests in
tests/ui/render.test.ts. Two counter-checks hold: running the work
after the frame fails one unit test, and taking the coalescing out of
the canvas puts the measurement back at 36 ms and 4153 ms.

Refactoring round two: the particle and shader compilers share emitGraph.ts (cycle detection,
duplicate names, emit order) and keep only their rules. FontLibrary and TextureLibrary sit on
FileLibrary (base URL, loading/failed bookkeeping, listeners); SoundLibrary keeps its own
contract. The three Create*Command share ImportFileCommand, the three renames share
RenameCommand - class names stay. bandBounds() in framing.ts and portNameField() in
portSection.ts replace in-file clones, and three comments that told history now state the rule.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The graph could hold any number of nodes and said nothing about which of them
belonged together. Groups and comments are two separate things, as decided in
the issue: a group is a titled box that carries the nodes it encloses, a
comment is free text that carries nothing.
Both live as optional arrays on Graph, not as registry nodes. A comment that
were a real node would run through the interpreter, show up in the drop
palettes and be compiled into a shader — the wrong place for a piece of text.
As arrays on Graph they exist in all four graph kinds at once, and a document
without them means exactly "no groups", so no format bump.
Membership is computed when the box is grabbed, never stored: the center of a
node inside the box travels with it, and a node dragged out is simply out. A
box inside a box travels with the outer one, its own nodes included. A group
is grabbed by its title bar only — its body stays transparent to the pointer,
or a rubber band could never be drawn across the nodes it holds. Deleting a
box deletes the box; the nodes stay where they are, because a box that
silently took ten nodes with it would be the most expensive surprise in the
feature.
The color is a free picker, and the title color follows from it: relative
luminance per WCAG, threshold at 0.179 where the two contrast ratios meet —
not 0.5, which would pick white on mid grey where black reads better.
Resizing snaps the far edge to the grid, not the width, so the corner that is
not being dragged stays put. The minimum size rises in whole steps for that
reason: 80 is no multiple of 24, so a box squeezed to the stop would have sat
off-grid in exactly the mode meant to keep it on.

The suite spent 88% of its step time asleep: 564 s of steps, 496 s of
them in sleep(n) - fixed spans estimated by hand and then copied from
step to step. That is why it was slow, and why it flickered.
The signal is afterFrames(count, timeout) in ui/render.ts, exposed as
__gm.afterFrames(). It wakes the loop itself, because an editor that
draws nothing would never redeem a promise of a frame, and it gives up
after a timeout instead of hanging the run. settle() in the harness
waits two drawn frames (~32 ms) instead of 150-300 ms and falls back to
sleep(150) when the hook is missing (an old build): silently not
waiting would make every later check a coin toss.
Every action goes through it now - click, doubleClick, wheel, drag,
dragAsset, press, typeText, select, mutate, undo, redo - and with that
about 550 sleep() calls behind those actions became redundant, helpers
that are nothing but a mutate in a coat included. What a frame cannot
answer got its own condition instead: waitUntil(expr), play()/stop()
waiting on __gm.state.mode rather than on 300 ms, saved() for the
autosave (the two hand-written polling loops sampled at 300 ms for
something that arrives after a second), and showTab() as a real tool -
47 places called evaluate("__gm.showTab(...)") raw, and 24 of them
waited for nothing at all and read the old panel.
564 s -> 243 s of step time, the waiting share 88% -> 76%. Three kinds
of wait were kept, and each one bit when it was taken away: loading
bytes (textures, fonts), game time that a repaint cannot stand in for
(time scale, shader and particle clocks, the live values a running
graph carries), and the inertia the scroll step measures on purpose.
Two things the new speed uncovered, both real: 25-animation read the
frame menu unfiltered and had frozen an incomplete list (the CI failure
on c990dbc), and 33-render-on-change measured idleness while the
autosave of the step before was still painting - it waits for
saveStatus to leave dirty/saving now, so it measures that nothing
happens any more instead of that it waited long enough.
Typing "variable" into the node palette landed on `Run behavior`, because the
filter weighed label, type and description alike and then sorted by category.
`searchRank` in `src/ui/search.ts` now ranks a match: exact label or type, then
prefix, then label, then type, and only last a hit that lives in the
description alone. Category and alphabet order within a rank. The searchable
`Menu` uses the same function, so searching means the same thing everywhere.
The `+` menu grew to fifteen entries in declaration order. It is built in two
alphabetical groups now -- the types that go into a scene, then the ones that
stay in the library -- with a separator between them, the split `isPlaceableType`
already draws. `ASSET_TYPES` itself stays untouched: it is also the
serialisation and check order. A search flattens the groups and drops the lines.
Popups were capped at fixed heights (320 menu, 260 palette, 340 pickers) while
the canvas had room to spare. `Popup.roomFor()` measures its own chrome and
takes the window height minus a tenth at each end. Placement clamps
asymmetrically: the bottom margin is enforced, the top is only a budget, so a
menu anchored near the top stays at its button instead of being pushed off it.

The renderer is taken off the ticker; the ticker itself keeps running, so
the clock, a live world and the panels still get their step. Drawing now
happens inside a 200 ms trailing window that every pointer, wheel and key
event, every Widget.invalidate/resize, every Stack.relayout, every
EditorState.emit and both library onChange hooks reopen. The window rather
than a single frame is what makes the ~70 direct redraw() calls that never
pass through invalidate() safe, along with repaints an event only starts:
a microtask, a texture upload, a resolved font.
Editor.movesByItself() keeps asking for every frame while Play or an editor
run is on, a time shader is on screen, or the particle or animation preview
is showing.
The FPS counter now counts drawn frames over the time the renderer was
awake. Idle seconds are not slow seconds, so it answers "how smooth while
it moves" and holds its last answer instead of falling to 0 at rest.
Measured on the built stand, 20 s per variant, CPU of all chromium
processes from /proc: kept awake 75.5 % of a core at 60 fps, render on
change 8.8 % with 0 frames drawn, awake again 83.9 % as an order probe.
No colour check can see a missing repaint: pixelAt extracts from the stage
on demand and is just as green on a screen frozen a minute ago. Step 33
watches the new __gm.renderStats() counter instead.
Behavior and Container draw an icon because isSymbolType() is true for them,
but that predicate does not mean "draws an icon" — it means "is editor
decoration". Four places read it that way: collectWorldItems, GameViewport.
collectFrame and syncDrawOrder all drop symbols out of the running world and
the game picture, and placementOf() gives them an upright unscaled box.
Listing 'particles' there would have handed the source an icon and taken away
its particles, in the scene view as well as in the game.
So the two questions are two functions now. hasSceneIcon() says a type draws
an icon; isSymbolType() keeps meaning decoration. The icon itself is a
SceneViewport decoration, which is editor-only for free because GameViewport
never syncs decorations.
A ring (r 10, #c26a1f) with four sparks, upright and unscaled like the other
symbols, its middle left open — unlike Behavior and Container a source draws
something of its own, and the field is densest exactly there. The name sits
beside it and a dashed line runs to the parent, same colour.
Found while writing the tests: the source's grab box scaled with its transform
while the icon did not, so the two came apart. placementOf() returns only the
translation for 'particles', making the box the upright 24 x 24 that covers
its icon. The source's own transform still feeds every particle untouched.

The asset type `particles` is placeable and carries a graph at the same time —
`behavior` was the blueprint. Because a continuous emitter gives birth to particle n
at time n/rate, the whole field is a function of the clock rather than of the frames:
no ring-buffer bookkeeping, exact time jumps, reproducibility as a measurable property.
compile.ts follows compileShader's frame but emits JS closures into a Float64Array
instead of GLSL, and without eval; a node with two consumers is evaluated once.
Drawing is one Pixi ParticleContainer per source, so one draw call.
Collision, wind and braking in flight are out for good — that is the price of the
formula model, not an omission.
The tab count goes from nine to ten, which is exactly the case #84 was built for one
day earlier: at 1280 px the row no longer holds every tab, so guard 14b now asks for
hidden.length > 0 instead of === 0.
The ninth tab (Shader) pushed the row past the centre column: List
ended at 962 while the column ended at 925, so the last buttons sat
under the inspector and clickText('Container') hit the List tab
instead (CI runs 5 and 6, module 16). Tab buttons now use padding 4
via a new Button padding option; e2e step 14b guards the row width
using the widget box rather than getBounds(), which sees only the
label on an untoggled ghost button.

A shader is an asset carrying a node graph (Texture color, Output, Property,
Color, Add/Subtract/Multiply/Divide, Mix, Luminance) that compiles to the GLSL
fragment of a Pixi filter. The Shader tab reuses the Behavior canvas; a sprite
wears a shader through its Shader picker, and the rows below it are the
graph's Property nodes. Property schema, resolution and deviation take the
project because a sprite's rows now live in another asset. The built-in
registry of the prototype is gone; "Adjust colors" ships as a graph in the
fixture and the three example games.

A log layer (src/editor/console/log.ts) keeps a 500-line ring buffer and
wraps console.log/info/debug/warn/error, still calling the original. Notices
and behaviour runtime errors go straight to the layer instead of through
console, so editor tests stay quiet and errors can render red. world.log is
untouched: it is per-run structured state that runtime tests and e2e read
directly, not a text stream.
The panel sits under the visible tab, resizable with Splitter('y'), with a
CONSOLE header and a clear button. Each line carries its wall-clock time in
its own dimmed column, so locate() still finds the message text.
The taller centre area drops the graph fit zoom to 0.60, which broke six e2e
checks that assumed one screen pixel is one graph unit and that a fixed
offset from the canvas centre is empty. They now ask __gm.emptySpot(),
__gm.graph.emptySpot() and __gm.graph.zoom() instead of guessing.
locate/locateAll added the unscaled Pixi text width to the global position,
so click points in the scaled graph canvas landed too far right; they use
getBounds() now.
check.sh: 831 tests. Full e2e: ALL PASSED - 671 checks. Smokes 24/19/20.

A state machine is an asset whose graph holds one `State` node per state
(no ports, name as title), edited in a new "State machine" tab that reuses
the graph canvas: right-click places "State n", snap toggle shared with the
Behavior tab via SnapToggle. `statemachine` is a value kind like texture
(port, literal node, variable, struct field, tagged list item).
Behaviors use it through `State branch` (one exec output per state) and
`Set state` (one exec input per state; the interpreter now hands `run` the
entry port). States live per behavior instance in NodeContext.states, with
no initial state. Ports derive from the inline picker or a wired
`State machine` literal; BehaviorLookup became GraphLookup with
behavior(id) and machine(id).
The Graph tab is labelled "Behavior" (key unchanged). Unit tests
(state-machine, kinds, catalog, ports), e2e step 26 and README added.

- actionIf replaces six identical Reset/Apply menu blocks, addNameField
the three name rows, assetLink the two asset links
- requireStructuralObject replaces ten two-line preambles and drops the
duplicate holder lookup
- __gm.objectsOf had no caller; the SMB remnant in e2e.sh is gone

- `.gitignore` said `index.html` unanchored, which also caught the Vite source page;
a fresh clone could neither `dev` nor `build`. Anchored to `/index.html`, page added.
- Removed GM_REMOTE (tools/remote/gm-browser.ps1 and the ssh/scp branch in browser.mjs):
the Windows test machine is gone and the only flaky check that lived on it is closed (#37).
- Removed `npm run preview`, undocumented and unused.
- Comments: wrong number in collider.test.ts (250 → 200), the "declarations used to…"
history in listItems.ts and friends, the 24 px/28 contradiction, section banners in
nodes/index.ts, node-catalog.test.ts and api/index.php, name paraphrases, and the stale
step numbers in tools/e2e/11-…23- from the old global count.
- README: asset types include `animation`, kind order Number/Text/Boolean, tagged colour
and texture items, 6/5 kinds, the `Texture` node, `./build.sh`, PROJECT_FORMAT_VERSION,
and the file tree (kinds.ts, listItems.ts, propertyPorts.ts, Breadcrumb.ts, beads.ts,
tools/assets/).
- tests/helpers.ts takes the duplicated `findObject` and `sceneWithCamera`.
Proof: ./check.sh 797 tests, full e2e ALL PASSED 633 checks against this bundle.

An animation asset is a list of pictures (whole textures or frames) with
frames per second and Loop/Once/Ping-pong playback. A sprite wears it
through its texture property, so the picker, instance overrides and the
Properties node work unchanged; there is no dedicated play node.
A different animation starts from its first frame, the same one set again
runs on, so a graph may choose Run or Idle every frame. The clock lives on
the entity, not in props, which the world writes back as overrides. The
AnimationSystem ticks before behaviors, and On animation finished fires
once when a Once animation reaches its end.
The Animation tab plays a preview above a frame strip: reorder by dragging,
Delete, duplicate, + Frames, pause/resume, and wheel zoom about the pointer
with pan and Fit. Scene and Container tabs show the first frame; edit mode
has no clock. Right-clicking a texture creates an animation from its frames.
Button now measures its label with the bold font it draws in, which cut
the Animation tab and red dialog buttons short.

The graph was only locked by five edit-mode guards in GraphCanvas. The
running game reads the graph by reference each frame, so a new node, edge,
changed value, disconnect or undo takes effect from the next frame. Stop
discards these edits like everything else changed in play. A new On start
node does not fire for a behavior that has already started.
During play every data output shows the value it last produced, in the
highlight colour and refreshed ten times a second. Values are kept per
graph, because node ids are only unique within one; with several
instances the most recent value wins. The Variables node reads the live
variable bag, so only its own outputs are kept, as a snapshot.
Each time an exec edge fires, a bead runs along it in 0.3 s, at most one
every 0.15 s per edge, following the same curve the edge is drawn with.
Beads run on game time and freeze while paused; the game logic is
unchanged.

A reference search over every export and method in src/ found code that
only tests still called, or that was never called at all:
- RemoveSceneObjectCommand: the product only removes through the
multi-object command; the tests now use that one too.
- NodeRegistry.requireNodeDef: a second function of the same name in
commands/require.ts raises a CommandError instead of throwing, and is
the one the product uses. The twin invited the wrong import.
- isTextureAsset, listContainers, AssetTabEditor.show,
FocusManager.destroy, KeyboardBridge.selectAll and the getters
ColorField.value, ListView.selected, NumberField.number.
Also: Theme.controlActive now matches the resting control colour, and a
new note asks what editing the graph during play would take.

Button, Checkbox, the color swatch and list rows took a hard-coded
'pointer'; they now read Theme.hoverCursor, which is 'default'.
Also adds the todo note for a breadcrumb when drilling into a
sub-behavior in the graph.

Split GraphCanvas (1076 -> 831 lines) into EdgeLayer and graphMenus;
the port and marker menus were the same list and are now one function.
Value specs of the inspector and the list tab share valueSpecs.ts, and
the remaining copies (compound commands, type glyphs, typed asset
lookup, name rule, play/editor world setup, marquee) are merged.
Four copies had already drifted apart; merging them fixes:
- "Disconnect N links" in the port menu is one undo step, not N
- "+ Add collider" is hidden on a placed container instance, as in
the hierarchy menu, instead of always failing
- a bool property coerced from the text "false" becomes false
- a port command on an unknown node type reports instead of crashing
Comment-only edits leave the bundle byte-identical. README corrected in
35 places (step limit, jump-run clock, suite duration, 409 body, ...).

buildStructBlock only covered structs, so a placed instance drew numbers,
text, bools and lists through createFieldRow on a 64 px name column while
its struct block sat on the asset's grid below it. variableRows.ts now
builds the row for every variable kind on both sides; the edit option
decides what the owner may change (asset: rename, x, item kind; instance:
revert and push). Label and Button take a fixed width so the mark column
no longer shifts names when a list shows its item-kind picker.
The two structFields calls that became dead with 9f48257 are gone. The
e2e steps locate the Enabled toggle through __gm.inspectorField instead
of clicking a fixed offset from its label.

A short list opened after a long one drew all its rows stacked on one
point. The fault was not in the list tab: rebuild() handed the row stack
to setContent() while it was still empty, so the content was sized to
max(rows, viewport) = the viewport. The rows arrived after that, and for
a short list the same formula yields the same height, so resize() saw no
change and skipped layout(). A long list changes the height and never
showed it.
relayoutContent() now runs whenever the content changed, rather than
leaning on resize()'s change detection - that detection is the wrong
instrument for "the children moved".
The list tab was the only affected caller: the panels use ListView,
which positions its rows itself, and the inspector fills its body
before setContent.
Also drops the comma line under the list. Every section that can carry a
list supplies openList, so the comma fallback in fieldFactory was
unreachable; listToText/listFromText go with it. The list-value test now
covers coerceListItem through coerceValue instead, so the boolean
spelling stays guarded.

A rebuild destroys the widget being typed in, and a typed value can change the
very structure that decides whether a rebuild is needed -- a field that says
how many ports a node has. That made such a field unusable: every keystroke
previewed, the preview emitted 'project', refreshValues() saw the signature
change and threw the row away. Dragging the value worked only because a drag
keeps receiving globalpointermove on the destroyed widget.
So refreshValues() now postpones a due rebuild while the focus sits inside the
inspector, and runs it as soon as the field is left. Values are safe in the
meantime: TextField.setValue ignores an edit in progress.
Two handles for that in the toolkit. FocusManager.isWithin(node) also replaces
the parent chain refreshLive() walked by hand, and changeHandlers lets a panel
notice that the focus has gone -- there was no signal for that before.
Nothing in the editor can trigger this today, since the Sequence setting that
did is gone. It is the ground for the List tab, where a row that adds or
deletes an item changes the structure while you type. The e2e check therefore
builds the case out of real parts: type into a field, set the object's parent
from outside -- the parent is part of the structure signature -- and confirm
the input survives and the rebuild follows on Escape.

PropertyValue was number | string | boolean | list. A struct joins it, which
costs two things the typechecker found rather than I did.
An object on a data edge used to mean a live entity, so asEntity would have
taken a struct for one and asString would have read .name off it. EntityHandle
now carries a symbol brand – a symbol so no field name can impersonate it, and
it never serializes, which suits a thing that exists only while the game runs.
It is built in exactly one place.
String(value) would have written a struct as [object Object] at 39 call sites.
They go through textOf(), which is identical for primitives.
normalizeGraph dropped everything but primitives from node params, so the List
node lost its value on every save ([3,1,4] round-tripped to undefined).
Variables were spared: they have a schema, params have none.
Both stores carried their own ~28-line request<T>, and formatBytes existed
twice – the second copy had lost the "B" branch, so a small sprite would have
read as 0 KB had its caller ever passed one under a kilobyte.

A variable could only be a number, a text or a yes/no, so every set of values had
to be smuggled through a string - which is where Tetris got its unreadable
"03066326048763714" colours from. A list is now a value of its own, with an item
kind (number, text, yes/no, colour) that decides how the inspector reads the one
comma-separated line it is typed as, and eight nodes to work with: List, Fill,
Count, Item at, Set item, Sub list, Join lists, Index of.
Two traps came with it. An array is typeof 'object', so every place that told a
value from an entity had to learn the difference, or a list would have been
passed around as a game object. And a value was compared by identity in three
places - with lists that marks everything as an overridden property after each
reload, so those comparisons now compare contents.
There is no list of objects: a list is written to the project file and an object
is a live handle that no reload survives. A set of objects stays a list of names.

A behavior node that cannot run looked exactly like a healthy one: no
start node, no behavior picked, a deleted behavior or a self-call were
all silently skipped. The call still had to be forgiving at runtime -- a
dangling reference must not abort a game -- so the fix is diagnosis, not
an exception: describeProblem() names the one reason, the node draws it
in red under its title, and the inspector repeats it where you pick the
behavior. A missing end node is deliberately not a problem: a call is
always synchronous, and the end node only decides which values come back.
Two ways in: a behavior dragged from the asset panel lands in the graph
under the pointer, and double-clicking a call node opens the graph it
runs. Both reuse machinery that already existed -- the asset panel
already starts the drag, and list views already report double clicks.
The e2e module needed its assets at the head of the asset list: after 18
modules the list is long enough that a newly appended row scrolls out of
view, and the press then lands on the panel behind it, starting no drag
at all. That looked exactly like a rejected drop and cost two full runs.
