Finding the first item that matches took Count, Repeat, Item at and a
Branch, and the loop could not stop once it had found something. A graph
has no lambdas, so the predicate is an input that is read every round.
- For each runs body once per element, with item and index set, and
goes on at done.
- Its break input is read anew before every round, after item is set.
Once it is true the loop ends there and that round's body does not
run.
- done sees the matching item and index with stopped true. Without a
match it sees no item, index -1 and stopped false, the OrDefault.
- RepeatResult has optional items, stopWhen, stopped and exhausted.
GraphInterpreter.loop reads them, Repeat runs as before.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 180 files, 2623 tests, CHECK EXIT 0
- e2e GM_STEPS=1-6: ALL PASSED, 269 checks
- 5 interpreter tests in graph.test.ts, 2 catalog cases
- e2e 6z-iv: the palette creates the node, and a search for
Name == "Gold" in Axe, Gold, Bow, Gold logs "1true"
- Counter-checks: without the break check 2 unit tests fail, and with
break not read over its edge 6z-iv fails
- This commit alone: tsc and the three touched unit files pass

Every animation in a behavior had to build its interpolation from
Subtract, Multiply and Add, once per axis. The gold pickup in
"Garden of Sacrifices" needed about 30 nodes for that alone. A single
Lerp node with an ease makes those chains one node each.
- Lerp has the inputs a (default 0), b (1) and t (0) and the output
result. It sits in the data category next to Clamp.
- The Ease setting offers Linear, In, Out and In-out, all quadratic.
The node row shows it as "Ease: Out".
- t is held in 0..1. A timer that overshoots in the last frame still
lands exactly on b.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 178 files, 2583 tests, CHECK EXIT 0
- 7 new cases in the node catalog test. Without the clamp on t,
2 of them fail.
- e2e 6z-iii (2 checks): typing "lerp" in the palette adds a linear
Lerp, and picking "Out" in the inspector reaches the node and its
row. GM_STEPS=1-6: ALL PASSED, 267 checks.
- README check sum is 1459, computed, not counted.

An asset could only be picked as a setting on the Spawn node. It could
not be wired in, held in a variable or put into a list. Finding an
object below the own one needed a scene-wide search by name.
- "Asset" is now a kind like Animation or Sound: port, variable, list
item and a new "Asset" literal node, with its own cube icon.
- Spawn and Is asset have an `asset` input. It uses the key of the old
setting, so a saved asset reads as the value of the input and older
projects keep spawning without a migration.
- New node "Child by name" searches below an object level by level.
A child wins over a grandchild of the same name. Nothing found or no
object gives null.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 168 files, 2453 tests, CHECK EXIT 0.
- 9 new unit tests in tests/core/asset-kind.test.ts, catalog cases for
Spawn, Is asset, Child by name and the literal.
- e2e 6z-ii (2 checks): node rows and a real drag of the literal onto
`asset`. e2e 6: 119 checks passed. Spawn checks in 3 and 9 passed.
- Counter-checks: depth-first search fails 1, Spawn reading only the
old setting fails 3, runtime ignoring the parent fails 1.

A new node handed null to every unconnected input that had no port
default, even a Bool. The inspector showed false, 0, "" or an empty
list at the same time, so what the node read was not what the editor
said. 97 of 135 inputs of the built-in nodes were affected.
- inlineValue() falls back to the default the inspector shows. One
place covers every node, also future ones and saved projects.
- A default list is handed out as a fresh copy per read, so a node
that edits its input in place cannot change the shared default.
- The node shows the value it reads: an empty text or list as
(empty), an object or struct input without a link as (null).
Live values while playing use the same words.
- A key input without a key keeps showing a dash, like the key field
in the inspector.
- Visible changes in old projects: To text without input gives ""
instead of "0", Select and First not empty give "" instead of null.
Tests:
- 8 new unit tests in tests/core/inline-defaults.test.ts, among them
one over all built-in nodes that no typed-in input reads null.
- The e2e check in module 6 reads the rows of an unlinked Name of
node. The check sum stays the same.
- ./check.sh: 167 files, 2434 tests, exit 0. e2e 6: 117 checks.

Until now every port of "First not empty" was grey and typeless, so the
editor could not tell you what actually travels through the node. The
output is now typed as soon as both inputs agree, and every any-input is
painted in the colour of its own edge. Nothing changes at runtime.
- A NodeDef can declare which of its ports carry the same value
(`sharedType: { inputs, outputs }`). The rule itself lives as a pure
function `agreedType` in `src/core/graph/portTypes.ts`.
- Only the output inherits. It becomes the shared type when every input
of the group is connected and they all carry the same type, otherwise
it stays `any`.
- The inputs stay `any` on purpose. `canConnect` checks against the port
type and a busy input is replaced by the new edge, so a typed `a`
could never be re-plugged with a text without disconnecting first.
- Chains do not propagate. When looking up what feeds an input, a node
of the same kind reports the `any` it is registered with, so two of
them in a row stay untyped and a data cycle cannot ask itself in a
circle.
- An edge that the new type makes invalid stays where it is and turns
red. `EdgeLayer` already paints a mismatching edge with `danger`,
nothing is disconnected on its own.
- New `PortDef.paintType`: colour only, never truth. It is set in
`drawnDef` and read in `NodeView.redraw`, so `canConnect`, the
interpreter and the compiler keep seeing `any`. Every connected
any-input is painted, not just members of a `sharedType` group; ghost
ports keep their hollow red look.
- The pin now matches the edge that ends in it, because both take the
colour from the resolved output type of the neighbour. Mixed sources
therefore show two colours, which explains why the output stays grey.
- New hooks `__gm.graph.portTypes(id)`, `__gm.graph.edgeColor(id)` and
`__gm.themeColor(name)`. `portTypes` reports type and paint colour
separately so the type checks do not silently become colour checks.
Findings:
- `resolveDef` only appends derived ports to the registered ones, so a
fixed port cannot be retyped that way -- it would appear twice. The
shared type is therefore resolved before the ports are built.
- Answer 5 of the issue (inline field follows the type) has no case left
under variant A: an unconnected input stays `any` and keeps its text
field.
- `Item at`, `Join` and `Equals` do not profit: `Item at` has no
any-input, the other two have fixed outputs. The next candidates are
the shader arithmetic nodes, which were left alone.
Tests:
- ./check.sh -> 143 files, 2127 tests, exit 0 (was 142 / 2113)
- GM_STEPS=1-6 fresh -> ALL PASSED, 245 checks (was 242), 9 of them new
- 14 new unit tests in tests/core/shared-port-type.test.ts
- 9 new e2e checks in block 6z, one of them a pixel check straight on
the pin via pixelAt + themeColor
- Counter-probes all bite: filtering unconnected inputs out of
`agreedType` fails 3 unit tests, ignoring `inherit` fails 1, killing
the derivation in the bundle fails exactly the 2 expected e2e checks,
and never setting `paintType` fails 4 unit tests plus the 3 pin
checks (#bdbdbd instead of #e6a8ff / #6fcf97)
- Screenshot read: `a` pink, `b` green, output `value` grey, edges in
the same colours
- Check total 1302 (1299 + 3), 1293 was measured by CI at 1a3babf

The suite job for 0d20776 died in module 06. The new font and theme
moved the layout, and three checks relied on the old one.
- 06: the ranking step right-clicked the spot where step 6d had just
dropped a Log node. Whether that click hits the node depends on how
the layout snaps it. It now asks for a fresh empty spot.
- 14 and 27 expected a shut panel to keep 30 px. The header is
Theme.rowHeight + 4, now 26. A new hook __gm.panelHeader hands the
checks the real height, so the next theme change does not break
them again.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 141 files, 2080 tests, exit 0
- Local full run before the fix: 06 passed with the new spot, only the
three header checks in 14 and 27 failed.
- GM_STEPS=1-14,27 after the fix: ALL PASSED, 457 checks
- No new checks, the total stays at 1286.

The snap toggle was a checkbox with the word "Snap" next to Fit, and
the vector art tab had its own "Grid" button for the same idea. Both
now share one square icon button, so snapping looks and works the
same wherever it exists.
- SnapToggle is a square toggle button with a magnet icon and no
text. It lights up blue when snapping is on, like the other toggle
buttons.
- The magnet is drawn with cubic curves instead of arcs, because the
Pixi SVG parser draws arcs as jagged edges.
- The vector art tab drops its Grid button and uses the same
SnapToggle. It still snaps to 8 px, the graph tabs to 24 px.
- SnapToggle accepts anything with setSnapping(on). The vector art
canvas method is renamed from setSnap to setSnapping for that.
- Every tab exposes the button as __gm.<tab>.snapButton(). Modules
06, 26 and 36 click through that hook instead of the label "Snap"
plus 30 px.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 129 files, 1903 tests (was 128 / 1897)
- 3 new tests in tests/editor/snap-toggle.test.ts, 3 in the icon tests
- GM_STEPS=1-6,26,36,47 fresh: ALL PASSED, 346 checks
- GM_STEPS=47: ALL PASSED, 32 checks (was 29)
- Counter-checks: toggle not switching its target fails 2 unit
tests, the canvas ignoring the switch fails module 47
- Check total 1188 in README and wiki is computed (1184 + 4), the
full run is left to CI

The suite spent 88% of its step time asleep: 564 s of steps, 496 s of
them in sleep(n) - fixed spans estimated by hand and then copied from
step to step. That is why it was slow, and why it flickered.
The signal is afterFrames(count, timeout) in ui/render.ts, exposed as
__gm.afterFrames(). It wakes the loop itself, because an editor that
draws nothing would never redeem a promise of a frame, and it gives up
after a timeout instead of hanging the run. settle() in the harness
waits two drawn frames (~32 ms) instead of 150-300 ms and falls back to
sleep(150) when the hook is missing (an old build): silently not
waiting would make every later check a coin toss.
Every action goes through it now - click, doubleClick, wheel, drag,
dragAsset, press, typeText, select, mutate, undo, redo - and with that
about 550 sleep() calls behind those actions became redundant, helpers
that are nothing but a mutate in a coat included. What a frame cannot
answer got its own condition instead: waitUntil(expr), play()/stop()
waiting on __gm.state.mode rather than on 300 ms, saved() for the
autosave (the two hand-written polling loops sampled at 300 ms for
something that arrives after a second), and showTab() as a real tool -
47 places called evaluate("__gm.showTab(...)") raw, and 24 of them
waited for nothing at all and read the old panel.
564 s -> 243 s of step time, the waiting share 88% -> 76%. Three kinds
of wait were kept, and each one bit when it was taken away: loading
bytes (textures, fonts), game time that a repaint cannot stand in for
(time scale, shader and particle clocks, the live values a running
graph carries), and the inertia the scroll step measures on purpose.
Two things the new speed uncovered, both real: 25-animation read the
frame menu unfiltered and had frozen an incomplete list (the CI failure
on c990dbc), and 33-render-on-change measured idleness while the
autosave of the step before was still painting - it waits for
saveStatus to leave dirty/saving now, so it measures that nothing
happens any more instead of that it waited long enough.
Typing "variable" into the node palette landed on `Run behavior`, because the
filter weighed label, type and description alike and then sorted by category.
`searchRank` in `src/ui/search.ts` now ranks a match: exact label or type, then
prefix, then label, then type, and only last a hit that lives in the
description alone. Category and alphabet order within a rank. The searchable
`Menu` uses the same function, so searching means the same thing everywhere.
The `+` menu grew to fifteen entries in declaration order. It is built in two
alphabetical groups now -- the types that go into a scene, then the ones that
stay in the library -- with a separator between them, the split `isPlaceableType`
already draws. `ASSET_TYPES` itself stays untouched: it is also the
serialisation and check order. A search flattens the groups and drops the lines.
Popups were capped at fixed heights (320 menu, 260 palette, 340 pickers) while
the canvas had room to spare. `Popup.roomFor()` measures its own chrome and
takes the window height minus a tenth at each end. Placement clamps
asymmetrically: the bottom margin is enforced, the top is only a budget, so a
menu anchored near the top stays at its button instead of being pushed off it.

`nodeUnder()` recomputed the node's face as `0 <= x <= w`, while the pointer events follow the
`hitArea`, which reaches `PORT_HIT_RADIUS` past the edge. An input port sits at exactly x = 0, so the
global point rounded back landed a hair outside: the drop counted as one on empty canvas, the node
palette opened and swallowed every later click – four checks of step 6 at once. `NodeView` now
answers from that same `hitArea`, and the step also checks that no palette is open.

A log layer (src/editor/console/log.ts) keeps a 500-line ring buffer and
wraps console.log/info/debug/warn/error, still calling the original. Notices
and behaviour runtime errors go straight to the layer instead of through
console, so editor tests stay quiet and errors can render red. world.log is
untouched: it is per-run structured state that runtime tests and e2e read
directly, not a text stream.
The panel sits under the visible tab, resizable with Splitter('y'), with a
CONSOLE header and a clear button. Each line carries its wall-clock time in
its own dimmed column, so locate() still finds the message text.
The taller centre area drops the graph fit zoom to 0.60, which broke six e2e
checks that assumed one screen pixel is one graph unit and that a fixed
offset from the canvas centre is empty. They now ask __gm.emptySpot(),
__gm.graph.emptySpot() and __gm.graph.zoom() instead of guessing.
locate/locateAll added the unscaled Pixi text width to the global position,
so click points in the scaled graph canvas landed too far right; they use
getBounds() now.
check.sh: 831 tests. Full e2e: ALL PASSED - 671 checks. Smokes 24/19/20.

A state machine is an asset whose graph holds one `State` node per state
(no ports, name as title), edited in a new "State machine" tab that reuses
the graph canvas: right-click places "State n", snap toggle shared with the
Behavior tab via SnapToggle. `statemachine` is a value kind like texture
(port, literal node, variable, struct field, tagged list item).
Behaviors use it through `State branch` (one exec output per state) and
`Set state` (one exec input per state; the interpreter now hands `run` the
entry port). States live per behavior instance in NodeContext.states, with
no initial state. Ports derive from the inline picker or a wired
`State machine` literal; BehaviorLookup became GraphLookup with
behavior(id) and machine(id).
The Graph tab is labelled "Behavior" (key unchanged). Unit tests
(state-machine, kinds, catalog, ports), e2e step 26 and README added.

- `.gitignore` said `index.html` unanchored, which also caught the Vite source page;
a fresh clone could neither `dev` nor `build`. Anchored to `/index.html`, page added.
- Removed GM_REMOTE (tools/remote/gm-browser.ps1 and the ssh/scp branch in browser.mjs):
the Windows test machine is gone and the only flaky check that lived on it is closed (#37).
- Removed `npm run preview`, undocumented and unused.
- Comments: wrong number in collider.test.ts (250 → 200), the "declarations used to…"
history in listItems.ts and friends, the 24 px/28 contradiction, section banners in
nodes/index.ts, node-catalog.test.ts and api/index.php, name paraphrases, and the stale
step numbers in tools/e2e/11-…23- from the old global count.
- README: asset types include `animation`, kind order Number/Text/Boolean, tagged colour
and texture items, 6/5 kinds, the `Texture` node, `./build.sh`, PROJECT_FORMAT_VERSION,
and the file tree (kinds.ts, listItems.ts, propertyPorts.ts, Breadcrumb.ts, beads.ts,
tools/assets/).
- tests/helpers.ts takes the duplicated `findObject` and `sceneWithCamera`.
Proof: ./check.sh 797 tests, full e2e ALL PASSED 633 checks against this bundle.

A single node now lists any number of variables. Every entry is an output
that reads the current value whenever it is pulled; an entry switched to
Set is also an input and is written when the flow arrives. Exec pins only
exist while at least one entry writes, and all inputs are read before any
write, so one node can swap two variables.
Get/Set variable, Get/Set variables and Variable are gone. Old project
files are converted on load: each old node becomes a Variables node with
the same variables, edges and typed values.
A written port without a typed value now shows the zero of its kind on
the node body, matching what the inspector shows and what the run writes.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Get properties / Set properties work like their variable counterparts:
one port per chosen property, an unconnected input writes its inline
value. A port chosen from the built-in list keeps that property's field
and default (height starts at 100, color is a colour field). "object" is
reserved for the fixed input, checked by the command and on load.
The property picker names the owning type ("Sprite width"), and text
fields can now carry a suggestion list; Get/Set property use it.
Double-clicking a call node shows the path of opened behaviors under the
graph header. Clicking an entry jumps back and trims the path; choosing
a behavior any other way hides it. Reopening a behavior already on the
path steps back to it instead of repeating it. The bar shows before the
graph switches, otherwise it clips the graph that was just fitted.
The "Add node..." header button is gone; nodes come from the context menu.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Get/Set variable nodes now title themselves "Get <name>" / "Set <name>", and
the new Variable node just "<name>"; the title is the same folded or open,
and a collapsed node shrinks to it. The redundant "Variable: <name>" row is
gone unless the variable was deleted ("<name>?" is the only hint then).
The Variable node sets its value when an exec flow arrives and exposes the
value at any time. Its output is read when a downstream node pulls it, not
frozen at the write, so count = count + 1 is one Variable node plus an Add.
Get variable keeps reading once per pulse: switching it would change the
behaviour of existing games.

Adding a collider now lives only in the Scene objects context menu, deleting a node on
the Delete key and the node context menu. The e2e checks that pinned the inspector button
now drive the hierarchy menu instead, including that its entry is disabled on template
content and on a placed container without raising a notice.

Measured click-to-paint was 72-77 ms, of which the editor itself spends
under 4 ms; the rest is the finished frame waiting in the compositor
queue. A desynchronized context bypasses it (16-18 ms in the same probe).
Pixi has no option for it, so main.ts builds the WebGL2 context itself.
The mode may tear on some drivers; ?vsync falls back to Pixi's own
context.
__gm.lowLatency() reports the attributes the browser actually granted,
and a graph-step check pins that the mode stays on.
Also adds the todo note graph-node-collapse-width.

Split GraphCanvas (1076 -> 831 lines) into EdgeLayer and graphMenus;
the port and marker menus were the same list and are now one function.
Value specs of the inspector and the list tab share valueSpecs.ts, and
the remaining copies (compound commands, type glyphs, typed asset
lookup, name rule, play/editor world setup, marquee) are merged.
Four copies had already drifted apart; merging them fixes:
- "Disconnect N links" in the port menu is one undo step, not N
- "+ Add collider" is hidden on a placed container instance, as in
the hierarchy menu, instead of always failing
- a bool property coerced from the text "false" becomes false
- a port command on an unknown node type reports instead of crashing
Comment-only edits leave the bundle byte-identical. README corrected in
35 places (step limit, jump-run clock, suite duration, 409 body, ...).

A chevron in front of the title toggles it without touching the selection,
and right-click offers Collapse node / Expand node for the whole selection
as one undo step. A collapsed node draws its title bar alone; every link of
one side meets at a single point on it, and hidden links there share one
mark per side, since per-port marks would stack on the same pixels. It has
no ports to grab, so a link dropped on it connects nothing.
Like hiding a link this is drawing only: collapsed is saved on the node and
an expanded node leaves no trace in the project file.

A link can be folded away from the canvas: instead of a curve running clear
across the graph, each end grows a short stub with a mark naming the node at
the far side. The curve comes back while either of its two nodes is selected,
so following a connection is a click rather than a search, and a link carrying
a live pulse is always drawn so the trace keeps its thread.
Marks are collected per port, not per link, because several hidden links on one
port used to stack stubs, dots and labels on identical pixels. A bundle reads
"Move +1" and its dot selects every node the port feeds, as one undo step.
The whole thing is one optional flag on the edge; the interpreter never sees it.

Three things the graph view did differently from the scene view, or not
at all:
Panning moves to the middle button, which works from anywhere – a node
under the pointer included, since NodeView now lets that one button
bubble up. Shift-drag on empty canvas pans too. The left button pulls a
rubber band instead and no longer pans.
Nodes can be selected several at a time: by band, by ctrl/shift-click,
moved together, deleted together, each as one undo step. The selection
model gains `nodeIds` alongside the objects' `objectIds`.
Fit really fits. It used to pin the zoom at 1 and merely centre, so a
graph larger than the view always left nodes hanging out, and it sized
every node with one guessed height although real ones vary with their
port count. Both sums now live in editor/graph/framing.ts as pure
functions, which is what made the defect testable at all.
The band selects any node it overlaps rather than one whose position it
contains, unlike the scene view: nodes are large rectangles, and a band
drawn visibly across one has to catch it.
Releasing an edge over empty space opened the node palette but dropped the edge
drawing, so the connection being made was invisible exactly while its target was
being chosen. The finished drag is now held in `pendingDrop` and drawn like a
running one until the palette closes, by pick or by Escape.
The e2e check for the Escape path exposed a real defect underneath: `Popup.open()`
blurs the focused widget, `close()` did not. A field inside the popup therefore kept
the keyboard bridge's DOM focus after the popup was gone, and every later Delete or
Ctrl+Z went into that invisible input. The suite caught it one check later ("Delete
removes the node and its edge" found the node still there). `close()` now blurs,
mirroring `open()`.
Verified remotely on the Windows host: 287 editor checks and 24 jump-and-run smoke
checks, no failures.
Dragging an edge now rings the port it would connect to and snaps the line
there. A drop on a node's body takes that node's first free compatible port,
or the last compatible one when none is free, replacing its link. A drop into
empty space opens the palette filtered to the node types the edge could reach
at all, and the picked node arrives wired - node and link as one undo step,
so a single undo takes back the whole gesture.
The decision of what fits what lives in core/graph/dropTarget.ts as pure
functions, tested directly; the canvas only draws the answer. The palette
takes an optional filter rather than knowing about drags.
Verified remote on the Windows box (GPU): ALL PASSED, 284 checks.
Remove comments that only restate the code, keeping the section banners
and the notes that carry a reason, a measured fact or an external
contract.
ButtonOptions.width claimed to be a fixed width but only set minWidth,
so the Graph and Texture pickers grew with the name they showed. It is
now what it promises, with a separate minWidth for the buttons that have
two forms. Narrow buttons shrink their padding, otherwise a 24px icon
button had 8px left for its glyph and truncate dropped it entirely.
__gm.labelsDropped() guards that class: the overflow guard only saw text
that was too wide, never a label truncated to nothing.

- NumberField takes a decimals option (default 3); frame rects and the
slice dialog use 0, matching their integer model.
- Button truncates its label to the drawn width; Dropdown reserves the
chevron slot. NodeView reuses the shared truncate().
- Setting scaleMode leaves the style's shared resource id in place, so
the old GPU sampler stayed in use until a reload. Call style.update().
- Graph gets a header bar like the Texture tab: GraphEditor is now the
frame, the former editor is GraphCanvas. A selection the tab does not
concern no longer unloads the behavior.
- New e2e step 14 guards text overflow across all widgets.

Menu entries are left-aligned and live in a ScrollContainer capped at 320 px, so a
long list (the parent picker holds every object of the scene) scrolls instead of
running off the screen. `Menu(items, { searchable: true })` puts a filter box above
the scroll area; Enter takes the first match. Filtering forces a relayout because
two queries with the same hit count leave the height unchanged, which would keep
the stale row positions.
Fields that open a menu are a new `Dropdown` widget: the value sits flush left and
the chevron is drawn flush right instead of being written into the label. A menu
opened below a field is never narrower than that field.
New debug hooks `overlayTexts()` / `overlayRect()` make the popup contents
assertable; e2e step 11 covers the cap, the scrolling and the search box.

Tooling:
- Prettier as the single formatting authority (110 columns, single quotes,
measured against the existing style); Markdown excluded because table-cell
padding turns the README glossary into 1000-character lines.
- Type-aware ESLint ending in eslint-config-prettier, so a rule always means
"this is a bug", never "this looks different".
- .editorconfig and an `npm run check` that runs typecheck, lint, format and
tests in one go.
Findings fixed on the first run: three more duplicate imports, four
String(unknown) calls (parameter types narrowed instead of casts), two dead
initialisers, two redundant casts, a console.log for a real error. Two
warnings were false here and are disabled with a reason in place.
Tests 132 -> 269:
- node-catalog.test.ts covers every node with a run(), with a guard that fails
when a new node has no row.
- behavior-events.test.ts covers the ten event nodes through a running World,
checking timing rather than existence.
- Input's state machine (press/release/releaseAll) is reachable without DOM
events now; the DOM handlers are thin adapters.
Compare fell back to == without a configured operator although the schema
default is <; aligned.
