Add the composition asset with its tracks, items and clips (#417)
A composition is a timeline of scene objects for cuts and cutscenes. This first step brings the model and the pure evaluation behind it. The tab and placing it in a scene follow in the next steps. - CompositionAsset holds objects, tracks, items and clips. Each item owns exactly one object with overrides and container edits. - The composition is a third object holder next to scene and container. Delete cascade, undo, usages and references work with it. - Duplicating gives the copy new object ids and moves the item ids along with them. - compositionAt() tells which items live at a frame. The top track is drawn in front. - A clip acts on the item of its own track that it overlaps. After its end it holds the last value until the item ends. The animation's play mode is ignored, a clip is one pass. - Clip targets are found by template path, else by name path, like the runtime's animation system. - The root sprite of an item plays its video driven at offset plus time. Children follow unless they are already driven by hand. - fittedLength() gives the video or clip length minus the offset, or 3 s without media. - fps (60) and loop live in their own properties file. Keeping them in PropertySchema would close an import cycle. - The type is listed under Visuals with its own icon. It is not placeable yet. Tests: the gate passed with 300 files and 4625 tests. That is 25 new tests in tests/core/composition.test.ts and 2 icon checks that run for every icon. Four counter-checks (track order, overlap rule, child videos, ids on duplicate) each turned exactly their test red. e2e 04 passed with 67 checks and now counts 33 asset types. Play videos on sprites, converted on the server with clips (#402)
A video becomes an asset like a sound: uploaded once, converted to one format by a worker of its own, cut into clips in its tab, and worn by a sprite through its Texture row. Only Chrome is a target, without alpha. - Server: POST ?r=videos queues the upload under the hash of its bytes, so the MP4's name is known at once. The worker (VideoWorker over VideoFormat) writes H.264/AAC, yuv420p, constant frame rate, a keyframe every 15 frames, at most 1920x1080, with a poster and the details beside it. A failed job says why and is tried again on the next upload. - An upload may be up to 2 GB. It is streamed from the request to disk and hashed there, so php-fpm holds none of it in memory. The other routes keep their 256 MB. - The worker runs in the container game-maker-video on stein2, a compose project of its own (tools/video/), and in CI beside the PHP server. The CI image has ffmpeg for it. - Model: asset type video with size, length, frame rate and sound, and clips like a sound's. The clip helpers and commands serve both. - A sprite's Texture row offers videos and clips after the pictures. resolvePicture names a playing video by a key, and the texture library hands it to a VideoLibrary with one player per key. - The editor shows a placed video as a quiet preview. Play starts it over at its clip's start and lets it be heard through the master bus, a pause holds it, Esc makes it quiet again. - Video tab: the picture, a ruler, the clip strip and a track on the Sound tab's time axis. A drag spans a clip, a handle moves an edge, Play plays the picked clip. - The picker shows a video on its way with its progress and adopts an upload from it once it is ready. Dropping a video file does the same. Decided on my own: - Two sprites wearing the same clip share one player and show the same picture. Control per instance belongs to the follow-up with nodes. - A video plays in real time, the game's time scale does not slow it. - The container may use 3 of the 4 cores of stein2. Findings: - The first real upload (279 MB) got 413: the API's own ceiling of 256 MB for every request, not nginx or the Brandmauer. - Chrome has no picture of a video that never played, and a Pixi VideoSource drawn before the first frame stays empty for good. The texture is made in the first frame callback (openVideo). - A player nobody asks for in 2 s is let go. The inspector's PREVIEW asked only on an edit, so with the sprite not on screen its texture was destroyed under it and the batcher threw on every frame. The preview now redraws every frame while it shows a video, like a Time shader. A let-go texture keeps an empty source instead of none. - VideoSource.load() reloads the element and cuts off an earlier play(). Playing starts after loadeddata. Tests: - PHP videos.test.php: 68 checks, with the real ffmpeg - 300 MB upload through Brandmauer and nginx: 201 in 21 s, php-fpm at 13.7 MB RSS at most - Unit videos.test.ts: 20 tests - e2e 66 (stein2, atx was off): ALL PASSED, 18 checks; e2e 04 with the new asset count green - Gate (atx): 294 files, 4520 tests. serialize.test.ts used video as its example of an unknown type and now uses a made-up one. - Counter-checks: a keyframe gap of 30 fails the PHP check, a key that keeps the video's end fails 2 unit tests, a clip without its end fails "plays only its stretch" in e2e 66 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Show empty asset groups on request, and add by the heading (#361)
The asset panel only listed the categories and types that hold assets. To make the first asset of a kind you had to know its category in the `+` menu. A switch now lists all of them, and a right-click on a heading offers just what sits under it. - General settings has "Show empty asset categories and types", off by default and kept in this browser. Applying it refreshes the panel at once through a new `onGeneralSettings` listener. - `groupAssets(assets, empty)` gives every category and type when asked. The empty ones stand faint with a count of 0, and an empty type has no chevron, since there is nothing to unfold. - `ListItem.faint` draws a row's label, hint and icons at half opacity, like a disabled widget. - A right-click on a category heading offers the types of that category without a submenu, on a type heading only that type. The empty space below the rows still opens the whole `+` menu. `ListView.onListMenu` passes the heading's id for this. - Every menu of new assets says "Create asset" above its entries, so a click on a type reads as making one. `MenuOptions.title` draws that muted line. It is not an entry and matches no search. Tests: - Unit asset-groups and view-tween: 23 green, 2 new. Counter-test with the empty flag ignored: the new groups test fails. - e2e 04 (melektaus-atx): ALL PASSED, 67 checks, 4 new and 1 rewritten. Counter-test with the heading id dropped: the 3 menu checks fail. The title is checked on the `+` button and on a type heading (2 checks extended), the rerun passed with 67 checks. - Gate (melektaus-atx): CHECK EXIT 0, 272 files, 4212 tests. It ran before the menu title. Afterwards only the menu and asset-groups units, typecheck and lint ran, all clean. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Pick a new asset from category submenus in the + menu
The + menu was one long list in two groups, placeable types and library ones. That split is no longer wanted. The menu now lists the categories of the asset panel, and each opens its types beside it, so a new asset is filed where the panel shows it. - Menu learns submenus: an entry with submenu instead of onSelect opens a second Menu right of the first, or left of it where the canvas ends. Its first entry lines up with the row that opened it. - A submenu opens on hover or click. Resting on another entry swaps or closes it after 150 ms, so a pointer cutting across the rows on its way into a submenu does not lose it. - The row of an open submenu stays lit, and a triangle pointing right marks every such row. - A submenu has no backdrop and no Escape of its own. Popup takes a backdrop option for that. The first menu's backdrop and Escape close the whole stack, and picking an entry does the same. - assetMenuCategories replaces assetMenuGroups and takes categories and their order from ASSET_GROUPS. The types are sorted by label. - New test hooks __gm.menuSubmenus() and __gm.addMenuCategory(). pickAssetType opens the category first, so the modules that pick a type through it need no change of their own. Modules 04, 10, 47, 48, 53 and 54 open the category themselves where they read the menu. Tests: - Unit asset-menu: 4 green - e2e 04: ALL PASSED, 63 checks. New: categories in panel order, each type once and sorted, submenu placement, hover swaps the submenu, picking closes menu and submenu - Gate: CHECK EXIT 0, 261 files, 4040 tests - The other modules that use the + menu did not run here Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Group the asset panel by category, then by type
The asset panel listed one heading per type, 30 of them side by side. Now the types sit under five categories, and each type heading reads like its entry in the + menu. - ASSET_GROUPS replaces ASSET_GROUP_LABELS and gives every type a name and a category: Basics, Visuals, Logics, Physics or Audio. - The categories keep that fixed order. The groups in a category and the assets in a group stay sorted by name. - A category heading folds like a group heading. A project opens with every category open and every group folded, as before. - Selecting an asset unfolds its category and its group. Folding the category of the selected asset lets go of the selection. - The headings are singular now (Scene, Sprite, Sound FX). The old plural names only kept them apart from the + menu entries. - locate looks in the popup layer first. A click by text meant for a menu entry hit the heading of the same name, since the panel is drawn first. Below an open menu a click only closes the menu anyway. - New test hook __gm.assetCategories(). Tests: - Unit asset-groups: 6 green, counter-check (empty categories kept) 1 red - e2e 04: ALL PASSED, 63 checks (1 new). Counter-check with locate taking the first hit again: 2 red, the click on Behavior created no asset - Gate: CHECK EXIT 0, 261 files, 4040 tests - The category names got their final plural form after these runs. The unit test ran again on them (6 green), e2e 04 did not. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Lay patterns and sounds out on tracks and play them as a song #334
Patterns could only be heard one at a time, in their own tab or from a behavior. A song lays patterns and sounds out on tracks along one time axis and plays them through the scheduler of #332, the third piece of the music tools of #330. - New asset type song under the heading Songs, with four empty tracks, 120 BPM in 4/4 and a grid of a bar. Tempo, meter and grid are rows in the inspector. Tracks, items and the loop are the asset's data, held to their rules on load and in every command. - A track has a name, volume, pan, mute and solo. Each is heard on a bus of its own, so a change reaches what is sounding at once. - A pattern item repeats its pattern for as long as it is, with a transpose and another instrument if wanted. A sound item plays its sound as a clip at its own speed, round and round, through a sound FX if wanted. Both have a volume on top of their track's. - Cut back at the left end or split, an item starts as far into what it plays as the cut is: ticks into a pattern, seconds into a sound. - The tab shows the heads with M, S, volume and pan, the ruler of the Pattern tab and the items, a pattern with its notes, a sound with its waveform, a missing asset red. Patterns and sounds are dragged in from the Assets panel. Body, right and left end move, lengthen and cut back, Alt leaves the grid. Ctrl+C/V/D/A, Ctrl+E splits where playing starts, Delete, arrows. A double-click opens a pattern item in its tab. - What is picked is a new selection of its own, so the inspector shows the item or the track, with a button to delete it. - The scheduler plans clips beside notes. Where the playhead starts or jumps back inside a clip, it is taken up that far into its sound. A clip fades out at the end of its item or of the loop. - The editor plays one piece at a time: a pattern started stops the song and the other way round. - The rules are pure functions in core/music/song, editor/song/ songView and songEdit. Draw notes for an instrument in a piano roll and loop them #333
Notes could only be played one at a time, by a key or a behavior. A pattern is a stretch of notes for one instrument, drawn in a piano roll and played in time through the scheduler of #332. Songs (#334) will lay patterns out on tracks. - New asset type pattern under the heading Patterns. Instruments are listed under Instruments now, since a heading is one per type. - Notes are a start and a length in ticks, a note number and a velocity, kept to their rules on load and in every command. The instrument, the length in bars, the grid, the meter and the tempo are rows in the inspector. The loop is the asset's own data, the whole pattern while none is set. - Grids from 1/1 to 1/32 and the triplets 1/4T to 1/32T, all whole ticks. The meter only moves the bar lines, the notes stay put. - The tab shows the keys down the left, a ruler with bars, beats, loop and start along the top, the notes between them and a velocity lane below. Keys the instrument plays nothing for are grey, the names of a drum kit stand on its keys. - A click draws a note on the grid line before the pointer, as long as the last one drawn or lengthened and as hard as the last velocity set. The body moves a note, the right end lengthens it, Alt leaves the grid. A drag on empty grid picks with a band, Shift adds, a right-click deletes. - Keys: Space plays, Delete, Ctrl+C/V/D/A, the arrows by a semitone or a grid step and with Shift by an octave or a bar. A paste lands where playing starts. Every gesture is one undo step. - A click on the ruler sets where playing starts, a drag the loop or one of its ends, its menu loops a bar or the whole pattern. - The wheel scrolls, Shift across, on the ruler or with Alt it zooms. Ctrl+wheel stays with the browser, Pixi listens passively. - Play runs the loop through the scheduler. An edit goes to it on the next window without a restart, a new loop or tempo counts from what is planned. Another pattern shown or a project opened stops it. - The time axis and the ruler are their own pieces in editor/music for the song tab. The rules of the roll are pure functions in rollView and rollEdit. Findings: - Music.play could start after a stop that came while it was still loading its files. A run counter makes the late start give up. Music.edit now loads what a new note needs as well. - A click on an end of the loop would have set the loop again. A press there only moves the end once it is dragged. Tests: - pattern.test.ts (new, 9) and piano-roll.test.ts (new, 16): model, grids, meter, held notes, sequence, commands, loop, round trip, drum names, time lines, rows, hits, bands, lane, edit rules. - e2e 64 (new) on melektaus-atx: ALL PASSED, 20 checks. e2e 4 with 29 asset types: ALL PASSED, 62 checks. - Gate on melektaus-atx: CHECK EXIT 0, 247 test files, 3839 tests. - Counter-checks: the move without its clamp, the sequence without the end of the pattern, the duplicate offset without whole grid steps each fail 1 test. Without passing edits to the scheduler the e2e check for a note drawn while playing fails, the rest passes. - Probe on stein2: the tab with a drum kit, before and while playing, looked at in two screenshots. Play sounds as notes of an instrument asset #331
A sound could only be played as it was, one at a time. An instrument
is a node graph that makes a note a sound: Notes nodes bring the note
in, Samples play sound assets for it, the effects of a sound FX shape
it and the Output sums the layers. Its tab plays it from a keyboard,
a behavior with Play note. It is what patterns and songs (#330) will
play.
- New asset type instrument, under the heading Music, not placeable.
A new one starts as Notes into a Sample into the Output.
- Notes are counted as MIDI does: 60 is C4, names like C#4, sharps
only, the lowest C-1. Notes has From and To, outputs any, note,
frequency and velocity, and with Single notes a trigger per note,
each with an optional name for a drum kit.
- New port type trigger, only into the trigger of a source. Inputs
can take any number of edges now (PortDef.many): a trigger, and
the Output, which plays everything into it side by side.
- Sample plays a sound asset. Follow note shifts it by note - root
through the pitch worklet of #317, so it keeps its length. Gate
fades it out at the end of the note, One-shot plays through. Loop
runs between Loop start and Loop end, also in the worklet.
- Parameters declares the instrument's own parameters with a
default. Sound FX sends the sound through a sound FX asset, its
parameters as inputs, the sound set in where its Input was.
- compileInstrument walks the graph once per note. A trigger is on
only for the notes it stands for, a silent source silences what it
alone feeds, a Mix with a silent side is the other side. velocity
and the parameters stay open for the voice. Builds are cached per
note until the graph or a sound or FX it names changes.
- The player takes a note as one voice of several layers, each way
with its own file and volume. release fades the gated ways out,
one-shots play on. playNote can release after a duration.
- Play note plays one note with velocity, volume, duration and
detached, and hands out voice for Set sound FX parameters and
Stop sound. Velocity is always loudness. Instrument parameters
picks values for the instrument's parameters like Sound FX
parameters does for an FX, renames follow.
- The tab has the graph, a header field per parameter, Stop, and
128 keys below. Keys without sound are grey. A key plays while it
is held. Focused, the computer keyboard plays as in a tracker by
KeyboardEvent.code, the arrows move the octave.
Findings:
- A label of the keys set fill on the shared small text style and
darkened every small label of the editor. Caught in a screenshot
before the commit, the keys have a style of their own now.

Duplicate an asset from its right-click menu (#297)
A new asset that starts out like an existing one (a death animation
next to "Break", a second slime) had to be built again by hand. Now
the asset panel's right-click menu has Duplicate.
- The copy lands right below the original and is named the way a new
asset would be ("Crate 2"). It is selected and its tab opens where
it has one. A copied scene does not become the active one.
- One undo step takes it out again. A redo brings back the same id.
- The copy is a deep copy: values, graph, tracks, layers and objects
are its own, and editing it leaves the original alone.
- Frames of a texture or of pixel art get fresh ids, because a sprite
names a frame across the whole document.
- Objects of a scene or container get fresh ids the way pasted ones
do. Parents and object references among them follow the copy.
- Whatever pointed at the original keeps pointing at the original: a
sprite wearing it, an animation's root, a placed object.
Tests:
- 3 new unit tests (DuplicateAssetCommand). One counter-check run:
without renaming the references the scene test fails.
- e2e 04: 2 new checks with the real menu (copy named "Crate 2" right
behind the Crate and selected, one undo removes it).
- Gate: 221 files, 3445 tests, CHECK EXIT 0.
- e2e total 1703 is computed (1701 + 2). Full suite left to CI.

Open a scene framed, and thin out two inspector sections (#295)
Three small things asked for in one issue. A scene came up wherever the view happened to stand, and the inspector carried a button and a list that are better reached somewhere else. - A scene comes up framed as if Fit had been clicked: after a project is loaded and when another scene is opened. From then on the view belongs to the user. - An empty scene has nothing to frame and stands at the origin, one pixel per unit. A scene the running game loads is not framed anew. - The Container tab is left out. It keeps the view of each container as before (#171). - The Unpack button and the two lines under it are gone from the inspector of a placed container. Unpack container stays in the right-click menu of the hierarchy and of the scene view. - The corners of a polygon collider are no row in the inspector any more. They are edited on the outline in the scene view. The new schema option noRow keeps a property out of the inspector while it stays a property. Tests: - Gate on melektaus-atx: 219 files, 3401 tests, CHECK EXIT 0. - One new unit test in tests/core/polygon.test.ts: the corners are a property of the collider and no row. - Three new e2e checks: a loaded project is framed like Fit (module 03), an opened scene is (04), and after a real reload a click on Fit moves nothing (09). - Module 09 unpacks through the right-click menu now and checks that the inspector offers no button. - Full suite on melektaus-atx: 1695 checks, all pass. Smokes 24, 19 and 21, all pass. - No counter-probe evaluated, and nothing looked at after the build. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Tie two objects with a hinge, a spring, a rope or for good (#154)
Two bodies could not be connected: no door on a hinge, no lamp on
a rope, no wheel on an axle. This is the first step of the issue,
the four joints without a motor. The slider and the motors follow
in a second step under the same issue.
- Joint is a new asset type, placed as a child of the object it
holds, like a collider or a rigidbody. "Add joint…" in the
object menu makes one or places one the project has. An object
takes as many as it needs.
- Where the joint sits is the point it holds its object at. A
hinge and a fixed joint have that one point only. A spring and a
rope end at a connected anchor on the other object, counted in
that object's own units, or in the scene's without one.
- The rows follow the type: length, stiffness and damping for a
spring, length for a rope, an angle limit for a hinge. Length 0
takes the distance the two ends were placed at. The limit counts
from how the two were placed.
- The connected object is an object reference in the schema of the
type. Pasting, containers and removing treat it as they treat
every reference since #258.
- shownFor is a new schema option: a row is shown while an enum of
the same bag holds one of the named values.
- The object needs a rigidbody, its own or one further up. Without
one the joint holds nothing and the console says so once.
- A connected object without a rigidbody is a moving anchor: the
joint has a kinematic body of its own that follows it.
- A connected object destroyed while playing makes the joint let go
with a hint. Removed in the editor the reference empties, so the
joint holds on to the scene. The issue asked for "inactive" there.
- "Add joint" ties two objects while the game runs, from a joint
asset as the template. Destroy on the joint lets go, there is no
Break joint node. Destroy with keep children takes the joints
along with the object.
- The scene view draws a line from each joint to what it holds on
to and rings the held point. A selected spring or rope has a
round handle on its far end, and dragging it is one undo step.
- Joints hold in Play only. The editor run simulates nothing
(#148), and the inspector of a placed joint says so.
- Rapier counts a revolute joint's limits absolutely, not from the
start, so the placed angle is added. Measured with a probe.
- The + menu has 25 types now and no longer fits under its button
on a canvas 800 high. It scrolls there, and e2e 04 scrolls to
the last entry instead of expecting it in view.
Tests:
- Gate on melektaus-atx for this state: 218 files, 3390 tests
(3336 + 54), exit 0.
- e2e 1-16,24,39-46,51,52,57,58 on melektaus-atx: 831 checks, all
pass. Module 41 alone: 25 checks (21 + 4).
- 54 new unit tests: 40 in joints.test.ts (rope, spring, pendulum,
limit, fixed, the other end, the node, containers, paste), 6 for
the line the scene view draws, 4 catalog cases of the node. The
remaining 4 come from tests that make a case per asset type.
- Four new e2e checks in module 41: Add joint from the menu, the
rope to the hook with its line and handle, dragging the handle
with one undo, the bob hanging in Play next to one that falls.
- e2e 04, 40 and 46 count the new type in their lists.
- 21 of 22 unit counter-probes fail their tests. The other one is
equivalent: Rapier ignores removing a joint that left with its
body, the guard stays.
- Three browser counter-probes fail their checks (2, 1 and 2).
- One screenshot looked at: icon, line, handle and the rope rows.
- The e2e sum of 1691 is counted (1687 + 4, 1687 measured by CI

Read many pixels from one render in the e2e checks (#283)
On the WSL runner every __gm.pixelAt costs about 7 ms, three times as much as on stein2. Each call renders the whole stage into a fresh render texture and stalls until the GPU hands one pixel back. pixelRow and several checks read hundreds of pixels that way. Module 05 spent 36.8 of its 40 s on these reads, module 04 11.3 of 20 s. - stagePixels in src/ui/render.ts renders once around all points and reads them in one go. Only whole pixels at resolution 1 take that path. Anything else stays point by point. - The hook __gm.pixels(points) exposes it, and pixelRow uses it. - The loops in e2e 04, 05, 14 and 44 read their grids in one call. - The old comment in pixelRow said a wider frame comes back resampled. That is not true. The colours match exactly, so the comment is gone. Measured on the RTX (d3d12) and on stein2 (Intel, Vulkan): diff 0 at 10 680 points on each GPU. One screen row takes 4 to 18 ms instead of 2.4 to 9.9 s. The six affected modules need 32 s instead of 139 s under WSL, faster than on stein2. The rest of the gap is in Chromium's GPU process. perf puts three quarters of its time in the drivers (NVIDIA D3D12, Mesa d3d12, dxg). Four browser and Mesa settings were measured, none helped. Tests: - ./check.sh on melektaus-atx: 195 files, 2827 tests, CHECK EXIT 0 (+4) - e2e 1-16,30,37,44,58 under WSL: ALL PASSED, 587 checks - counter-check: a wrong index in stagePixels fails the unit test Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Clip the children of an object to a clip area (#260)
An inventory grid could not scroll, because nothing could cut a child off at an edge. A game also had no way to hear the mouse wheel. Both are needed for a scrolling list, a dialog text or a window with more content than room. - A new object type Clip area has width and height and turns, scales and mirrors with its parent. The size gizmo drags width and height. - Everything below a clip area, on every level, is drawn only inside its rectangle, in the Scene view as in the game. Nested areas cut to their intersection. The rule works on a convex polygon, so a turned area cuts right as well. - On click, Is hovered and On mouse wheel do not hit a cut-off part. The Scene view does not pick it either. - In the Scene view the area is a dashed frame that is grabbed only at its edge, so a click inside lands on the content. The eye under Shape hides the frame. In the game the area is invisible. - While an object below an area or one of its parents is selected, the Scene view shows the cut-off part at 30 % opacity and it can be grabbed there. The rule lives in core/properties/clip.ts. - The Properties node knows the type Clip area. - The new event node On mouse wheel fires by the rule of On click. Its delta counts in notches, positive is down, and a frame's turns arrive as one value. It also gives x and y. Limits: - Only sprites and texts show the faded rest. Tilemaps and particles are cut and can be grabbed when open, but are not shown faded. - Masks by texture shape are out, as noted in the issue. Tests: - ./check.sh: 2773 tests, CHECK EXIT 0. - Full e2e run (local): ALL PASSED, 1549 checks, measured. - tests/core/clip-areas.test.ts: 12 tests for the cut rule, scene and game, save and load, hits, the wheel with and without owner, the notch conversion and the open rule. - e2e 58, 5 checks with real mouse and wheel: the scene cuts (74 of 74 red inside, 0 outside), a click on the cut part picks nothing, the selected rest is faded and grabbable, the game cuts, one notch logs 1. - e2e 04 and 46 count the object types and the eye rows. They now include Clip area. - Counter-checks: 6 in unit tests and 3 in the browser, all fail as expected. The originals were restored and checked with cmp. Define a struct once as an asset and reuse its shape (#253)
A struct used to declare its fields wherever it stood. The same shape in two variables meant typing it twice, and Pack/Expand copied it once without staying in sync. A Struct asset now holds the shape in one place, and every struct that picks it as its type follows it. - New asset type "Struct" (not placeable, group Structs, own icon). The inspector shows its fields with name, kind and default value, and "Open" shows them in the variables tab. - Struct variables and struct fields get a Type row: own fields, any Struct asset, or "Make struct type". With a type the fields come from the asset and cannot be added, renamed or removed there. The values stay per variable, overrides on placed objects still work. - Pack and Expand get the setting Type. With a type their ports are the fields of the asset and read-only in the inspector. - A change to the asset reaches every typed place in one undo step (syncStructTypes). A new field arrives with its default. A removed field goes along with its port, edge and typed value. A renamed field keeps its value in variables, overrides and on ports with edges, also through nested types. - Undo for these edits records plain assignments (Recorder), because the reach of a change is not known in advance. - Cycles such as Loot in Loot, also through another type, are refused and not offered in the picker. - Deleting the asset names how many places use it. Afterwards each place keeps its fields as its own. - Loading reshapes a stale copy in a project file to its type. - "Make struct type" creates an asset from an existing struct and links the place to it. Differs from the plan: - A changed default value applies to new fields and newly typed places only. Existing values stay. - Removing a single field shows no warning. Undo brings it back. Typed lists are left for #254. Lists stay dynamic for now. Found by e2e: after deleting or renaming the type the inspector did not rebuild and kept showing the old name. Fixed, the check was red before. Tests: - ./check.sh: 182 files, 2661 tests, CHECK EXIT 0 - GM_STEPS=1,4,21,22,54: ALL PASSED, 176 checks - 14 unit tests in tests/core/struct-types.test.ts - New e2e module 54 with 14 checks, real mouse. Module 04 counts 23 asset types. - Counter-probes: without the rename pass 4 unit tests fail, without reshaping values 8, without the cycle rule 1. In the browser, without spreading changes and with + Field despite a type, 3 checks fail. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Build your own easing curve and use it on keys and Lerp (#247)
The built-in eases cover the usual shapes, but a game often wants its own: a coin that bounces twice, a door that overshoots and settles. A new asset type holds such a curve, and keys and the Lerp node can pick it instead of a built-in ease. - New asset type "curve": points like in Vector art, x is t and y is the value. A new curve is the straight line from (0, 0) to (1, 1). - One pure evaluation in src/core/model/curve.ts serves the timeline preview, the running game and the Lerp node. - The curve always has one value per t. The end points stay at t 0 and 1, points cannot pass each other, and a handle that reaches past its neighbour is shortened along its direction. Loading a hand-edited file applies the same rules. - Curve tab: click on the line to insert a point that keeps the shape, click on free space to put one there, drag points and handles, double-click or Delete removes, Alt-click toggles round and sharp. Every step is one undo step. - Presets: all 30 built-in eases plus Linear, fitted with adaptive subdivision. Each stays within 0.4 % of the built-in ease. - Preview: a dot runs along the curve once a second, a second dot shows only the value. The Preview button stops it. - Animation keys get "Curve" under Easing with a curve picker. Lerp gets "Curve" under Ease, and its result may overshoot b. - A missing or unpicked curve runs linear. The inspector says so, the node shows it as a problem, and deleting a used curve warns with the number of keys and Lerp nodes. Tests: - ./check.sh: 180 files, 2612 tests, CHECK EXIT 0 - GM_STEPS=1-6,25,53: ALL PASSED, 309 checks - New e2e module 53 with 13 checks, all with the real mouse. Expected values come from its own Bezier evaluation. - Counter-checks bite: without Bezier evaluation 4 unit tests fail, without handle clamping 2. In the browser, a key that cannot find its curve, a click that sets no point and a handle drag that moves the point all turn checks red. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Open the add menu with a right-click in the asset panel (#244)
New assets could only be added through the + button. A right-click on a category heading or on the empty space below the rows now opens the same menu at the pointer. - ListView gets the callback onListMenu. It fires on a right-click on empty space or on a heading. Only the asset panel has headings, so other lists are not affected. - AssetPanel opens its + menu from there. - A right-click on a heading does not fold or unfold the category. A right-click on empty space clears the selection like a left-click. - A right-click on an asset still opens the menu of that asset. - The empty list now says "No assets - press + or right-click". Tests: - ./check.sh: 178 files, 2573 tests, CHECK EXIT 0 - e2e 1-4: ALL PASSED, 134 checks - 3 new checks in e2e 04 with real right-clicks: menu on the "Scenes" heading (21 types, heading stays folded), menu on empty space, and "Behavior" from that menu creates one, undone again. - Counter-probe: without the menu both right-click checks fail. Load the 500 weight and draw missing glyphs as SVG icons (#214)
The theme asks for Source Sans 3 at weight 500, but fonts.ts only
loaded 400, 600 and 700. The browser synthesised the 500 text. The
issue comment also asked for the symbols the font lacks to become SVG
icons. A scan of src/ against the font's cmap found 20 such characters
in 30 places.
- fonts.ts loads source-sans-3-latin-500-normal.woff2 as well.
- Menus draw their ticks and the "current" dot as icons. The dot is a
new MenuItem.current field and no longer part of the label text.
- Inspector action buttons (reset, apply, fit width/height) are
icons. The menu arrow behind them is the drawn Dropdown chevron.
- Kind marks come from a table in markIcons.ts. Picture kinds use an
icon, # and Aa stay text because the font has them.
- Scene marks in the asset panel, sound play/stop and the transition
arrows are icons too.
- Apply is an icon although the font has the arrow. It sits next to
the reset icon and would look different as a glyph.
- A new Icon widget draws on redraw like Button, so Node tests need no
DOMParser.
- Tests find icons through the SVG id. The new hook
__gm.locateIcons(id) and the harness helpers findIcon/clickIcon
replace locate() on the old characters.
Findings:
- Weight 700 is loaded but the theme never uses it. Left as is.
- The old scene-mark check in module 35 accepted any play glyph on
screen. It now checks the mark on the start scene's row.
- Module 44 needs the textures from module 37 and fails without it.
Tests:
- ./check.sh: 145 files, 2187 tests, exit 0 (before 144 / 2143).
- New tests/ui/fonts.test.ts: every theme weight is loaded, and every
character in src/ exists in every shipped face. The cmap reader
matches fontTools (231 characters).
- Icon tests cover the 19 new files. Each kind mark is either an
icon or text, never both.
- e2e 1-16,22,30,34,35,43,44: 586 green, 0 FAIL, then 44 stopped
for lack of module 37. e2e 1-16,37,44,47,48: 618 green.
e2e 1-14 on the final build: 454 green.
- Two new e2e checks: loaded weights in 14, a reset icon pixel in 04.
- Counter-probes all fail as expected: 500 removed, a play glyph put
back, the struct icon removed (one unit test each). In the browser,
500 removed and reset icon hidden fail exactly the two new checks.
- Editor-suite check sum 1312 (1310 measured by CI at

The asset type "vector art" exists as a model, which is stage 1 of #129 and shows nothing in the browser yet on purpose: a vectorart asset is not placeable, sits in the + menu and in the asset panel with its own icon (a curve between two points) and has no tab, so it behaves like a font - selectable, its rows in the inspector, a double click leading nowhere - because the tab is stage 3 and half an asset would only be in the way; the data model in Asset.ts is a shape built from rings (even-odd, so a shape may have holes, answer 6 in the issue), a ring being points with optional bezier handles in/out stored as an offset from the point and a closed flag (an open path is stroke only, answer 4), plus fill colour, opacity and an optional stroke (answer 5) - the two handles are kept apart instead of mirrored, because what "smooth" means is the editor's business and not the model's; canvas width, height and the filter are properties, so they get an inspector row and undo like any other, while the shapes are intrinsic data like the frames of a texture; the revision that #185 hands to the picture path is a fingerprint of what is drawn, not a counter, which is exactly why that key took a string token - no command can forget to bump it - and the name of a shape is deliberately left out of it, renaming changing no pixel; six undo commands in the new vectorArtCommands.ts (add a shape numbered in order, remove one which comes back to its old place - unlike a tilemap layer the last one may go too -, rename, move, write the rings as one step per gesture with the list copied, and set the style where stroke: null takes it away) and the pure function shapeOrderTarget for the four buttons of the planned inspector list (one forward, to front, one back, to back), which also serves dragging in that list; loading from a project file is strict - a point without numbers falls away, a broken handle leaves a corner behind, duplicate shape ids fall away like duplicate layer ids, a stroke of width 0 is no stroke - while a ring with a single point, which is what someone is drawing right now, stays; three findings on the way: JSON.stringify as the fingerprint was wrong because the same drawing came back from a project file as {points, closed} and was built as {closed, points}, so a reload would have rasterized the same picture under a new key (the fingerprint writes its fields in a fixed order now and a test measures that case), toNumber in serialize.ts turns any nonsense into 0 so the Number.isFinite checks ran into nothing and {x: 'far'} became the left edge instead of vanishing (shapes read numbers strictly via asFinite, 0 being a place on the canvas here), and "Vector art" would have been both a menu entry and the panel heading, which an existing test catches because a click by text would hit the heading - the group is called "Vector drawings" now while the menu entry stays "Vector art"; 20 new unit tests in tests/core/vectorart.test.ts and three counter-checks hold: the fingerprint back on JSON.stringify fails 2, reading the numbers loosely again fails 4, and not copying the ring list fails 1; no e2e check and the check sum stays 1157, only module 04 counting 19 asset types instead of 18 (#129)

Asset panel grouped by kind with icons: assets are listed under a header per kind (Sprites, Behaviors, ...) with the count on the right, empty groups are not shown, every group starts folded when a project is opened, a click on the header folds and unfolds it, selecting an asset elsewhere unfolds its group and folding the group of the selected asset clears the selection; every asset kind has an SVG icon in src/editor/panels/icons/ drawn before the name, the pure rule for grouping and sorting lives in assetGroups.ts; the same icons replace the kind word in document tabs and the overflow menu (a list icon for the List tab, which also fixes the close x lying over the end of the active tab's text), stand before every entry of the + menu (Button got an icon option) and on the right of scene object rows instead of the type name; the colour swatch next to sprite names is gone from both panels; the SVG loader moved to src/ui/svg.ts for both icon sets; test hook assetRow unfolds the group and scrolls to the row, assetRowShown only reads, new hook menuIcons; e2e 4g and 4h, 14 and 44a check the icons (#176)

Physics stage 1a runs on Rapier: a new Rigidbody child object (body type, mass, gravity scale, damping, fixed rotation, CCD) makes its parent fall, bounce and come to rest in play, colliders gain friction, bounciness and density, the scene gains gravity (0, 980), the new PhysicsSystem steps at a fixed 60 Hz with interpolation in world coordinates and treats a tilemap as static ground, On collision enter gains normal and impulse, play waits for Rapier and does not start without it, and the editor run keeps the old CollisionSystem; the existing collision tests run against both systems unchanged (#146)

An animation is a timeline of rows over one asset, played on an object rather than worn as a picture (#97)
Part (a) of the animation rework: model, commands, saving, runtime and nodes. - AnimationAsset holds a root (sprite, text, container or scene) and rows; a row keys one property of the root or of an object inside it, keys sit on whole frames. - The last key decides the length (its frame counts as a frame of its own). The playhead runs between frames, so numbers and colors blend every tick even at 10 fps; everything else holds. - Playback gains `once-reset`, which puts back what was there before the start. A row can be relative, adding to where its target stood. - Play / Pause / Stop animation act on an object; each instance plays on its own, the later start wins on a shared property, and a behavior writing the same property still writes last. - A sprite no longer wears an animation through `texture`. "Create animation from texture" builds a sprite plus a texture row keyed frame by frame instead. - The Animation tab shows a placeholder until the timeline editor (part b) lands. A test that waits for a deadline somebody guessed is waiting for the wrong thing, so it waits for the editor (#93)
game-maker / suite (push) Successful in 6m48s
The suite spent 88% of its step time asleep: 564 s of steps, 496 s of
them in sleep(n) - fixed spans estimated by hand and then copied from
step to step. That is why it was slow, and why it flickered.
The signal is afterFrames(count, timeout) in ui/render.ts, exposed as
__gm.afterFrames(). It wakes the loop itself, because an editor that
draws nothing would never redeem a promise of a frame, and it gives up
after a timeout instead of hanging the run. settle() in the harness
waits two drawn frames (~32 ms) instead of 150-300 ms and falls back to
sleep(150) when the hook is missing (an old build): silently not
waiting would make every later check a coin toss.
Every action goes through it now - click, doubleClick, wheel, drag,
dragAsset, press, typeText, select, mutate, undo, redo - and with that
about 550 sleep() calls behind those actions became redundant, helpers
that are nothing but a mutate in a coat included. What a frame cannot
answer got its own condition instead: waitUntil(expr), play()/stop()
waiting on __gm.state.mode rather than on 300 ms, saved() for the
autosave (the two hand-written polling loops sampled at 300 ms for
something that arrives after a second), and showTab() as a real tool -
47 places called evaluate("__gm.showTab(...)") raw, and 24 of them
waited for nothing at all and read the old panel.
564 s -> 243 s of step time, the waiting share 88% -> 76%. Three kinds
of wait were kept, and each one bit when it was taken away: loading
bytes (textures, fonts), game time that a repaint cannot stand in for
(time scale, shader and particle clocks, the live values a running
graph carries), and the inertia the scroll step measures on purpose.
Two things the new speed uncovered, both real: 25-animation read the
frame menu unfiltered and had frozen an incomplete list (the CI failure

A search that ignores what a thing is called is no search, so the name wins (#43)
game-maker / suite (push) Failing after 10m23s
Typing "variable" into the node palette landed on `Run behavior`, because the filter weighed label, type and description alike and then sorted by category. `searchRank` in `src/ui/search.ts` now ranks a match: exact label or type, then prefix, then label, then type, and only last a hit that lives in the description alone. Category and alphabet order within a rank. The searchable `Menu` uses the same function, so searching means the same thing everywhere. The `+` menu grew to fifteen entries in declaration order. It is built in two alphabetical groups now -- the types that go into a scene, then the ones that stay in the library -- with a separator between them, the split `isPlaceableType` already draws. `ASSET_TYPES` itself stays untouched: it is also the serialisation and check order. A search flattens the groups and drops the lines. Popups were capped at fixed heights (320 menu, 260 palette, 340 pickers) while the canvas had room to spare. `Popup.roomFor()` measures its own chrome and takes the window height minus a tenth at each end. Placement clamps asymmetrically: the bottom margin is enforced, the top is only a budget, so a menu anchored near the top stays at its button instead of being pushed off it. Asset panel: double-click opens the tab, single click only selects (#71)
game-maker / suite (push) Failing after 8m11s
One rule for every asset type: a click on an asset row selects it, a double-click (or Enter, or creating it via +) opens its tab. Selection alone still switches tabs only for nodes, frames and template objects. - state.openAsset(id) = select + 'open' event; the editor maps the asset type to its tab via TAB_OF_ASSET. The two special clauses for state machine and shader assets in the selection handler are gone. - Creating via + and importing a texture from the picker open the tab; paste/drop of an image only selects. - 3 unit tests (event order, re-open of a selected asset, selection never fires open), 14 e2e checks in step 4. Paint an asset's name gold while any of its values deviates
The inspector already marked an asset value that differs from its schema default, but the Assets panel gave no hint, so a changed asset looked like an untouched one until you opened it. The rule sits next to the existing objectDeviates as a pure function: assetDeviates asks whether any marked property differs, markedAssetSchema says which rows the inspector marks at all. buildAssetSection now builds its rows from that same list, replacing the behavior/rest split it used to carry, so the list cannot claim a deviation the inspector then fails to show. A behavior's variables are deliberately not in it. Their default is declared on the variable itself, which means the asset value *is* that default; counting them would paint the fixture's Mover gold while the inspector beside it marks nothing. |

Count clicks ourselves so double-clicks work at all
Pixi only fills `detail` on the `click` event it synthesises; on `pointerdown` it is always 0, so every `e.detail === 2` branch was dead code. Asset rows, hierarchy folding and select-all in text fields never responded to a double-click. A shared click counter in src/ui/clicks.ts replaces the three readings of `e.detail`. A finished double-click ends the run, so two in a row count 2 and 2 rather than 3 and 4. The harness could only send `clickCount: 1`, which is why no test caught this: every "activate" check went through Enter. It can send real double-clicks now, and five checks drive the three paths separately. |

Place assets by dragging them from the panel into the view
The context menu entry is gone; dragging replaces it entirely. The drop target is the view under the pointer, not the active tab, so the same gesture works for scenes and for container templates. While dragging, an outline shows the footprint the object will have plus a crosshair on its origin, turning red when the drop would be refused. Preview and command share one function (placementRejection), so the outline cannot promise something the drop then rejects. A left-press used to select the list row immediately. Since the container tab follows the selection, it switched to the very container being dragged and every drop would have nested it inside itself. The list now selects on release without a drag: picking something up is not the same as choosing it. |

Trim needless comments and fix the picker width
Remove comments that only restate the code, keeping the section banners and the notes that carry a reason, a measured fact or an external contract. ButtonOptions.width claimed to be a fixed width but only set minWidth, so the Graph and Texture pickers grew with the name they showed. It is now what it promises, with a separate minWidth for the buttons that have two forms. Narrow buttons shrink their padding, otherwise a 24px icon button had 8px left for its glyph and truncate dropped it entirely. __gm.labelsDropped() guards that class: the overflow guard only saw text that was too wide, never a label truncated to nothing. Add textures for sprites
Images are uploaded to a content-addressed blob endpoint and stored as data/textures/<sha256>.<ext>; the project only keeps the file name. The sprite points at a texture asset through an ordinary property of the new kind `asset`, so instance overrides, "Apply to container", "Reset to asset", undo and `Set property` work without any extra code. The new kind also replaces the ad-hoc asset picker the graph nodes faked as an enum. Import goes through + -> Texture, drag & drop onto the canvas or Ctrl+V. Images wider than 2048px are downscaled client-side and re-encoded to WebP if needed, because nginx caps uploads at 1MB; an image that already fits is uploaded byte for byte so pixel art is never resampled. The sprite colour default changes from red to white, since colour tints the texture multiplicatively and a tint of white shows an image as it is. Add ESLint and Prettier, and close the node test gaps
Tooling: - Prettier as the single formatting authority (110 columns, single quotes, measured against the existing style); Markdown excluded because table-cell padding turns the README glossary into 1000-character lines. - Type-aware ESLint ending in eslint-config-prettier, so a rule always means "this is a bug", never "this looks different". - .editorconfig and an `npm run check` that runs typecheck, lint, format and tests in one go. Findings fixed on the first run: three more duplicate imports, four String(unknown) calls (parameter types narrowed instead of casts), two dead initialisers, two redundant casts, a console.log for a real error. Two warnings were false here and are disabled with a reason in place. Tests 132 -> 269: - node-catalog.test.ts covers every node with a run(), with a guard that fails when a new node has no row. - behavior-events.test.ts covers the ten event nodes through a running World, checking timing rather than existence. - Input's state machine (press/release/releaseAll) is reachable without DOM events now; the DOM handlers are thin adapters. Compare fell back to == without a configured operator although the schema default is <; aligned. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |
